Eltham Wildcats’ guard Owen Foxwell has been praised by NBL1 South’s expert Matt Hickey for his basketball excellence at the ripe old age of 19.
Foxwell has re-signed with the NBL’s South East Melbourne Phoenix on a two-year contract after being a part of the club as a development player from 2021.
Hickey praised the value Foxwell adds to the Wildcats with his NBL experience.
“I think because we’ve seen him a little bit in the NBL system, we forget that he’s still only 19 years old,” Hickey said on The NBL1 Show.
“What this kid is doing is sensational.”
The 2022 NBL1 South Youth Player of the Year is averaging 19 points, 4 rebounds and 4.3 assists so far in the 2023 NBL1 season. In Eltham's 36-point win on Sunday, Foxwell exceeded his average stat line with a healthy 26 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists.
The 19-year-old’s two-point shooting accuracy was an impressive 80% as he led his team to a 102-66 win against Keilor Thunder.
“Big game against Keilor for Owen Foxwell,” Hickey said on Foxwell’s Sunday performance.
“The biggest number of the lot, he had zero turnovers.”
Hickey applauded Foxwell’s stat line and stated that Keilor's line-up is not an easy one to beat.
“This is a Keilor team that, although Eltham won comfortably, they’ve got Zac Triplett and Robbie Heath in the backcourt or potentially in the backcourt. Two guys who have experience in the NBL system, so a shoutout to Owen Foxwell because that was a sensational performance.”
The Wildcats are sitting second on the ladder with a 5-1 record and take on the fifth on the ladder Nunawading Spectres on Saturday at 7:30pm AEST. Watch the game live via NBL1.com.au or the NBL1 App here.
