Celebrating a Double Victory for NBL1 South Representative Teams
The Bendigo Braves Women and Knox Raiders Men have emerged as the triumphant champions of the 2023 NBL1 National Finals in Joondalup, WA.
NBL1 South Manager Alison Cody expressed her joy.
"It wasn’t until I awoke Monday morning after the weekend in Perth that I realised how winning the two South National Championships meant so much to me," revealed Cody. "Along with a sense of relief, I’ve always prided myself that the South Conference has a lot of depth and to win it takes a lot of things going your way and some luck."
The Bendigo Braves Women faced an exhilarating challenge as they endeavoured to safeguard their remarkable 27-game winning streak on the grandest stage. The first half of their championship clash was a nail-biting tussle, with their opponents putting up a formidable fight. However, the Braves showcased their mettle in the second half, leaving an indelible mark on the tournament and etching their name as the worthy champions.
Against all odds, the Knox Raiders Men, labeled as underdogs, unveiled an awe-inspiring display of resilience and unyielding determination that won the hearts of onlookers. Battling with only seven available players and overcoming an intense overtime game just hours prior, the Raiders' victory embodied the spirit of sportsmanship and dedication. Alison Cody applauded their remarkable journey, stating, "It was their tenacity, and their never say die attitude that got them over the line."
Alison Cody summaried the South's success at weekend tournament.
"The National Championship weekend is the pinnacle for the NBL1 clubs, and the league looks after the players and their team support so well. To get themselves in the position to be representing South is a feat, but to come away as National Champions is huge for them and for our conference. I couldn’t be prouder as the South League Manager."
