It was a night of firsts for the Mount Gambier Pioneers Basketball Club on Friday night at Wulanda. The Club played their first home games at their new home court, and came away with two wins! This historic event, though was overshadowed by men’s coach, Richard Hill, reaching the unique milestone of coaching the Castec Rural Pioneers for the 250th time.
Club President Tom Kosch said that Hill has been the lynchpin for the Club’s success over the last decade.
“Having guided the men’s team to three National Championships, five SEABL Conference Championships together with being SEABL Runner Up a further three times, SA Premier League Runner up in the Club’s sole appearance, and runner up in NBL1 South last year is a record that the Club is incredibly proud and one which will be difficult for anyone to surpass.
Hill’s successful coaching formula also resulted in him being named Coach of the Year on three separate occasions.
Our basketball club is very appreciative of the commitment and contribution Richard has made during his years with us. I have no doubt we wouldn’t have achieved the success we have had without the focus and amazing dedication Richard has given our Club,” Kosch said.
Richard Hill joined the Pioneers in 2012 and has led Mount Gambier’s men’s program to five conference and three national championships over his time as head coach.
Hill said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time with the Pioneers and can’t believe that more than a decade has passed by or that he has reached the 250 game milestone.
“Being involved with a Club where the board, our sponsors, fans and the community are tremendously supportive makes being part of the Pioneers a special experience.
After a successful 2022, I am excited by our prospects for 2023.
My milestone is not what is important; it is the continued development of the playing group which I am most proud,” Hill said.
