The South East Melbourne Phoenix have signed Bendigo Braves star Malcolm Bernard as an injury replacement for Trey Kell.

The Braves made it to the Semi-Finals, losing by five points to the Kilsyth Cobras. Malcolm averaged 18.3 points, 4.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds for the season and had five 20+ point games in the NBL1 South.

In back-to-back games in the NBL1 South Finals, Bernard hit three-pointers to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Knocking the Knox Raiders out and keeping things close against the Cobras.

“We felt in the short term we needed to add a player to our roster,” South East Melbourne CEO Tommy Greer said.

“Having Ryan (Broekhoff) and Trey unable to play, we wanted to find a versatile player to help us commence the season with the strongest line-up possible.

“Malcolm had a great season in NBL1 and we’re looking forward to having him join the team.”
