Miela Goodchild has torn through the NBL1 South this season.

Coming off of her WNBL season debut with the Melbourne Boomers, Goodchild signed with the Mount Gambier Pioneers where she has been one of the leading scorers in the competition.

She was just rewarded with a contract with the Perth Lynx, where she’ll join Bendigo Braves superstar Amy Atwell.

At the halfway point of the season, Goodchild was the leading scorer for the women’s competition with 27.5 points per game.

She told NBL1 Media that it’s been a fantastic experience to play with the Pioneers so far.

“The season has been awesome, I’m loving Mount Gambier,” she said.

“It's a really good club and the team’s bonding on and off the court, It really helps with the chemistry on the court. I really wanted to choose a team that I could kind of like let my game show off, I’m really happy that it's been able to do that.”

While being one of the best scorers in the competition, Goodchild saidl she still has room to improve – especially from the mid-range.

“The NBL1 has got quite a few WNBL players in it to that like your verse, you get to put in stuff you want to practice like my mid-range and then you get to trial it against the other teams and other WNBL players,” she said.

“So you know, it's a great platform to use and expand again.”

The 23-year-old is only a handful of years out of college at Duke University, where she finished eighth all-time in three-pointers made and the quickest to 100 made triples for the prestigious basketball program.

She said her time at Duke was an awesome experience with some challenges faced along the way.

“College is pretty awesome. Definitely a very full-on intense time,” she said.

“I didn't get the classic like typical college because of COVID, I didn't get my third year to play and I had coaches change which is wild, but yeah it was really good. Obviously, Duke is known for its basketball program so being able to train and like the elite facilities and in the ACC Conference, which is one of the toughest.

“Going up against the high calibre players every day in and day out was a pretty awesome experience. Yeah, there are many highs and lows but yeah, definitely helped me as a person and player.”
