NBL1 South Recap | Friday Women's Round 10

Round 10 in the NBL1 South 2022 season began on Wednesday night with the Ringwood Hawks defeating the Melbourne Tigers 71-47.

Friday night's action got underway with the Bendigo Braves impressive in their 92-70 victory against the Geelong Supercats.

Tess Madgen had 20 points in the first quarter on the way to 37 for the game for the Braves with Abbey Wehrung adding 28 points with six three-pointers. Sara Blicavs finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds for Geelong.

The Hobart Chargers broke through for their first win of the season and did so on their home court beating the Dandenong Rangers 77-64.

Angela Tompkins finished with 27 points and nine rebounds for the Chargers while Gemma Potter hit four threes on the way to 24 points for the Rangers.

The Ringwood Hawks then proved too strong at home for the Waverley Falcons winning 85-55.

Marena Whittle delivered 30 points and eight rebounds in the win for Ringwood while Renae Mokrzycki had 12 points for Waverley.

Round 10 in the NBL1 South will continue on Saturday evening with the Sandringham Sabres hosting the Geelong Supercats, the Knox Raiders at home to the Ballarat Miners and the Diamond Valley Eagles taking on the Casey Cavaliers.

Keilor Thunder are also at home to Kilsyth Cobras while the Launceston Tornadoes are playing the Dandenong Rangers with the Mount Gambier Pioneers hosting the Eltham Wildcats, and Frankston Blues battling the Nunawading Spectres.

Then on Sunday, it's the Melbourne Tigers hosting the Diamond Valley Eagles.

GEELONG SUPERCATS 70 lost to BENDIGO BRAVES 92

A scintillating start from Tess Madgen set the tone for an eventual 22-point win on the road for the Bendigo Braves against the Geelong Supercats on Friday night.

Bendigo arrived at The Arena on Friday night and by quarter-time, Melbourne Boomers WNBL championship winner and Australian Opals star Tess Madgen had delivered a remarkable performance.

She already had 20 points to her name to give the Braves the 31-18 lead over the Supercats. By half-time she had 27 points on her own and had set the tone for Bendigo to go into the half-time break leading 47-34.

From there Bendigo cruised to the eventual 92-70 victory on the back of shooting 53.9 per cent as a team from the floor and hitting 12/29 from three-point land with Geelong going at 37.0 per cent overall and 7/22 from downtown.

It was a phenomenal performance from Tess Madgen who finished the evening with 37 points to go with five assists and three rebounds from 16/23 shooting from the field and 4/9 from three-point land.

Abbey Wehrung was also outstanding for the Braves with 28 points and five rebounds on hitting 6/11 from beyond the arc while Megan McKay added 10 points and 14 boards, and Kelly Wilson nine points and nine assists.

It was tough going for the Supercats in the absence of Aimie Rocci with Sara Blicavs fighting hard for 20 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Sarah Elsworthy added 13 points and three assists, Rebakah O'Donnell nine points, and Alex Duck eight points, five rebounds and three assists.

 

HOBART CHARGERS 77 defeated DANDENONG RANGERS 64

The Hobart Chargers broke through for their first win of the 2022 NBL1 South season and they did so at home on Friday night beating the Dandenong Rangers by 13 points.

After 12 straight defeats to start the season, Friday night was the occasion for the Chargers to breakthrough at the Kingborough Sports Centre against the visiting Rangers.

Hobart did manage to lead 17-15 by quarter-time before putting together what was likely their best second quarter of the season with 22 points to 16 to head into the half-time break leading 39-31.

The Chargers were beginning to believe that this was the night and opened up a match-winning 20-point lead during the third quarter thanks to scoring eight straight points.

From there Hobart ended up winning the game 77-64 after the 12 straight losses to start the 2022 season.

It was an impressive shooting performance from the Chargers as they went 47.1 per cent from the floor opposed to the 33.9 per cent from the Rangers.

Angela Tompkins had a standout night in the win for Hobart with 27 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals while shooting 12/17 from the field.

Paige Bradley added 14 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals for the Chargers, Kyle McCauley 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Sharna Thompson nine points and six boards.

Gemma Potter ended the evening with 24 points and five assists for Dandenong on shooting 4/7 from three-point territory. 

Clare Camac added 21 points and seven rebounds with Charlotte Vincent contributing seven points and eight boards.

 

RINGWOOD HAWKS 85 defeated WAVERLEY FALCONS 55

The Ringwood Hawks showed their power on Friday night on their home court with an emphatic 30-point victory against the Waverley Falcons.

Ringwood hosted Waverley at Norwood Secondary College on Friday night in Round 10 NBL1 South action and it was a close contest throughout the first half.

Scores were all square at 20-20 at quarter-time before it was the Falcons holding a narrow one-point edge at 38-37 by half-time.

However, from there it was all the Hawks on their home floor as they piled on 25 points to eight in the third quarter, and 23 to nine in the fourth to end up winning comprehensively 85-55.

The victory improves Ringwood to an 11-3 record on the season while Waverley is now 7-5 following the defeat.

WNBL star Marena Whittle was outstanding on the night for the Hawks ending up with 30 points and eight rebounds while shooting 10/15 from the floor, 4/4 from three-point territory and 6/8 from the free-throw line.

Digna Strautmane also had 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocked shots for Ringwood with Marta Hermida contributing 18 points and six assists, and Jacqueline Trotto 10 points, eight boards, five assists, three blocks and two steals.

Renae Mokrzycki ended up with 12 points and four rebounds for Waverley while Bec Cole contributed 11 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks, and Amelia Todhunter 11 points and six boards.
