NBL1 South Recap | Saturday Men's Round 11

There were Saturday night NBL1 South victories for the Geelong Supercats, Casey Cavaliers, Bendigo Braves, Hobart Chargers, Keilor Thunder, Kilsyth Cobras, Mount Gambier Pioneers and Eltham Wildcats.

There were Saturday night NBL1 South victories for the Geelong Supercats, Casey Cavaliers, Bendigo Braves, Hobart Chargers, Keilor Thunder, Kilsyth Cobras, Mount Gambier Pioneers and Eltham Wildcats.

Round 11 in the NBL1 South began on Saturday night with the Geelong Supercats beating the Waverley Falcons 99-91 on the back of a big second half fightback.

Gabe Hadley finished with 21 points for Geelong and Demarcus Gatlin 18 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists. Tristan Forsyth top-scored for Waverley with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Casey Cavaliers produced a massive last quarter to come from behind and defeat the Frankston Blues 91-87 at Casey Stadium.

Davo Hickey finished with 23 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds for the Cavs with Jordan Bell scoring 21 points and Matt Donlan 20. Dillon Stith finished with 18 points for Frankston.

The Bendigo Braves put together a standout second half on the road to end up beating the Knox Raiders 83-72.

Jake Lloyd delivered 21 points and eight rebounds for Bendigo, and Sidy Djitte 18 points and 11 boards. Austin Shelley and Alex Robinson both scored 16 points for the Raiders.

The Hobart Chargers put together a huge second half to keep their winning form going with an eventual 88-82 victory against the Nunawading Spectres.

Jarred Bairstow scored 18 points for Hobart, AJ Harris 16, Jamar Sandifer 13 and Jacob Richards 12. CJ Asuncion-Byrd top-scored for Nunawading with 22 points.

The Keilor Thunder put together a terrific all-round performance on the road to beat the Ballarat Miners 88-68.

Kian Dennis delivered 26 points for Keilor while Jalon Miller top-scored for Ballarat with 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

The Kilsyth Cobras were another team to hit the road and take their best form to beat the Dandenong Rangers 103-75.

Corey Jeffs finished with 19 points for Kilsyth, Deng Deng 18, Adrian Tomada 16, Jamie Ahale 13 and Trey Moses 13 to go with 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Deng Puoch put up 30 points for the Rangers.

The Mount Gambier Pioneers maintained their winning form but they were made to work hard for it to beat the Diamond Valley Eagles 86-79.

Nick Marshall put up 26 points and 14 rebounds for Mount Gambier Ngor Manyang putting up 18 points for Diamond Valley.

The Eltham Wildcats needed until overtime to end up beating the North West Tasmania Thunder 92-88 at home on Saturday night.

Owen Foxwell came up huge for Eltham with 38 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals with Josh Sykes adding 21 points and 10 boards. Matt Kenyon finished with 24 points for North West and Fabijan Krslovic 21 points to go with 16 rebounds and seven assists.

NBL1 South Round 11 will wrap up on Sunday with the Kilsyth Cobras at home to the Geelong Supercats with the Ringwood Hawks playing the North West Tasmania Thunder and the Frankston Blues taking on the Hobart Chargers.

The Melbourne Tigers are also playing host to the Keilor Thunder with the Sandringham Sabres taking on the Mount Gambier Pioneers and the Waverley Falcons hosting the Eltham Wildcats.

GEELONG SUPERCATS 99 defeated WAVERLEY FALCONS 91

The Geelong Supercats finished impressively to beat the Waverley Falcons at home by nine points on Saturday night.

The Supercats played host to the Falcons at The Arena to open Round 11 in the NBL1 South on Saturday night and the home team managed to open up a five-point lead by quarter-time.

The Falcons, though, took over the contest in the second quarter by scoring 13 straight points and open up a double-figure lead on the back of 30 points to 13 for the term to go into the half-time break leading 55-43.

The Supercats had to respond if they were to avoid another loss on their home floor and they were able to do that by outscoring Waverley 25 points to 18 in the third term.

Geelong then kept rolling with another 31 points to 18 in the final quarter to end up winning 99-91 to improve to 9-5 on the season while with the loss Waverley is now 7-6.

Gabe Hadley delivered 21 points and five assists in the win for the Supercats with Demarcus Gatlin contributing 18 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists in a spectacular triple-double.

Isaac Turner added 16 points, two rebounds and two assists, Owen Odigie 16 points and 10 boards, and Matthew Johnson 12 points.

Tristan Forsyth finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and three steals for Waverley with Jake Heath contributing 14 points and two assists, Durrell McDonald 14 points and three assists, and Dexter Kernich-Drew 13 points and four assists.

 

CASEY CAVALIERS 91 defeated FRANKSTON BLUES 87

The Casey Cavaliers came from behind to deliver a huge last quarter to end up beating the Frankston Blues at home by four points on Saturday night.

The Cavs were at home at Casey Stadium against Frankston but it was the Blues who overcame an early seven-point deficit to end up leading by five at quarter-time.

Frankston ended up going up nine during the second term and were still on top 48-41 by half-time.

The Blues remained on top during the third quarter with another 7-0 run during the third quarter to be leading by 13 points, and to still be in control 75-64.

The Cavs might have been at home but had to dig deep in the fourth quarter and that's exactly what they did to outscore Frankston 27 points to 12 to end up claiming the 91-87 victory.

The win improves Casey to a 5-9 record on the season while Frankston is now 8-6 following the loss.

Davo Hickey continued his impressive form for the Cavaliers to lead the charge in their comeback win with 23 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.

Jordan Bell added 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Cavs, Matt Donlan 20 points and four rebounds, Nathan Frost 14 points and seven boards, and Mitchell Riggs 10 points and three steals.

Dillon Stith finished with 18 points and five rebounds for Frankston with Igor Hadziomerovic contributing 16 points and five boards, Adrio Bailey 13 points and six rebounds, and Daniel Trist 10 points and five boards. 

 

KNOX RAIDERS 72 lost to BENDIGO BRAVES 83

The Bendigo Braves kept their good recent form rolling in the NBL1 South Men's competition beating the Knox Raiders by 11 points on the road on Saturday night.

The Raiders hosted the Braves at the State Basketball Centre with Bendigo responding to falling down four points early to score eight straight points to go into quarter-time leading 21-18.

Bendigo extended their lead to seven points in the second term and by half-time still held on to the narrow 37-32 lead.

The Braves put together another 10-0 run during the third quarter to lead by as much as 13 points at one stage, and they maintained that advantage to lead by 14 in the fourth term and to end up winning 83-72.

The victory improves Bendigo to an 8-6 record on the season in Stephen Black's first season as coach after making the move across the Nullarbor. The Raiders are now 8-7 following the defeat.

The Braves were impressive by shooting 46.0 per cent from the floor opposed to 38.0 from the Raiders while they forced Knox into 20 turnovers and got to the foul line 24 times to just 10 from the home team.

Jake Lloyd ended up top-scoring for Bendigo with 21 points and eight rebounds with Sidy Djitte contributing 18 points, 11 boards and three steals.

Luke Rosendale also had 10 points for the Braves, Mitch Clarke 10 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Malcolm Bernard 10 points and three assists.

Austin Shelley finished with 16 points on 4/8 shooting from deep for Knox with Alex Robinson contributing 16 points, six rebounds and three assists, Reuben Te Rangi 11 points, Simon Grant nine points and eight boards, and Adam Gibson eight points, seven assists and six rebounds.

 

NUNAWADING SPECTRES 82 lost to HOBART CHARGERS 88

The Hobart Chargers had to come from behind at three quarter-time to keep their winning form going against the Nunawading Spectres on Saturday night.

The Spectres hosted the in-form Chargers at Nunawading Basketball Centre as Round 11 in the NBL1 South Men's competition got underway, and it was an entertaining first quarter with the home team leading 27-25 by quarter-time.

Nunawading was able to score 10 straight points during the second term to lead by as much as eight to and to remain on to 45-39 by half-time.

While the Chargers fired back in the third quarter with a 12-0 run to grab a seven-point lead, Nunawading responded to that to still be clinging to a one-point lead by three quarter-time.

Hobart delivered a strong fourth quarter at one point scoring 11 straight points to open up a double-figure lead and hold on to win 88-82.

The result keeps the Chargers in second position on the table at 11-3 while with the defeat the Spectres slip to 6-9 despite the encouraging performance.

Hobart had plenty of contributors throughout the night with Jarred Bairstow finishing with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists, AJ Harris 16 points and four assists, and Jamar Sandifer 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks.

Jacob Richards added 12 points and four rebounds, Harry Froling 10 points, six boards and four assists, and Ole Angerstein 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

CJ Asuncion-Byrd finished with 22 points for Nunawading with Jack Gandolfo contributing 18 points, six assists and four rebounds, Remo Simankevicius 16 points and five boards, and Dain Swetalla 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.

 

DIAMOND VALLEY EAGLES 79 lost to MOUNT GAMBIER PIONEERS 86

The Mount Gambier Pioneers maintained their hold on top spot in the NBL1 South but they had to work hard against the Diamond Valley Eagles on Saturday night.

Despite the absence of DJ Vasiljevic who is at the NBA Summer League, Diamond Valley played host to Mount Gambier at Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre and put up quite the impressive fight against the league-leaders.

The Pioneers managed to lead 18-10 by quarter-time but Diamond Valley hit back with a 9-0 in the second term to close that gap even though Mount Gambier once again pulled away to go up 13, and still be leading 42-35 by half-time.

The Eagles weren’t going away, though, and outscored the league-leaders 23 points to 17 in the third term to make it just a two-point ball game with a quarter to play.

Mount Gambier risked losing their grip on top spot with a loss but it wasn’t to be as they outscored the brave Diamond Valley fight with 27 points to 21 in the fourth quarter to end up winning 86-79.

In the end the major difference in the game was Mount Gambier winning the possession battle on the back of forcing Diamond Valley into 19 turnovers which then in turn saw them get to the foul line 25 times opposed to the Eagles' 10.

Nick Marshall led the charge for the Pioneers with 26 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and two steals on 10/13 from the charity stripe.

Michael Harris added 18 points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds, Tom Daly 15 points, five boards and four assists, Tom Kubank 13 points and eight rebounds, and Clevon Brown 10 points and five boards.

Ngor Manyang ended up top-scoring for Diamond Valley with 18 points with 4/9 shooting from downtown with Dane Pineau contributing 12 points and 11 rebounds, Ryan Bowkett 10 points, six assists and four boards, and Joel Capetola eight points, eight rebounds and five assists.

 

ELTHAM WILDCATS 92 defeated NORTH WEST TASMANIA THUNDER 88

The Eltham Wildcats needed overtime but ended up scoring the four-point home victory on Saturday night against the North West Tasmania Thunder.

The Wildcats hosted the Thunder at Eltham High School in Round 11 of the NBL1 South with North West starting on fire away from home going on an early 11-0 run and leading by as much as 15 points.

They were still up eight by quarter-time but Eltham fired back in the second term with their own run of scoring 16 consecutive points to grab the lead briefly, but still at half-time North West were just on top 44-43.

The swinging contest continued with the Thunder going up 17 again during the third quarter but the Wildcats fired back to stay in touch, and set up a thrilling finish.

Scores were level at 78-78 with two and-a-half minutes to go before Joel Chilcott drilled a three to put North West up three.

They were still up three after a pair of free-throws from Sean Macdonald, and they were still up three when Macdonald converted a layup. However, Eltham had one more chance and Deng Kuany drained the three to tie scores up and send the contest into overtime.

Owen Foxwell and Josh Sykes combined to give Eltham the five-point lead in overtime and they held on from there to end up winning 92-88 after a tremendous battle.

North West knocked down 17/43 from three-point range for the game while Eltham did a lot of their damage inside going 25/30 at the foul line.

South East Melbourne Phoenix's teenage guard Owen Foxwell was the star of the night for Eltham finishing with 38 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals on shooting 11/19 from the field, 3/7 from downtown and 13/15 at the free-throw line.

Josh Sykes finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, Sam Short 12 points, three boards, three steals and two assists, Mitch Dance nine points and four rebounds, and Deng Kuany eight points, five boards, three assists and two steals.

Matt Kenyon delivered 24 points and eight rebounds while hitting 5/7 from three-point range for North West with fellow Tasmania JackJumpers teammate Fabijan Krslovic finishing with 21 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists.

Joe Chilcott added 16 points on 4/8 shooting from deep with Cameron Brown contributing12 points, three rebounds and three steals, and Sean Macdonald 12 points and three boards.

 

BALLARAT MINERS 68 lost to KEILOR THUNDER 88

The Keilor Thunder overpowered the Ballarat Miners in the second half on Saturday night to claim the eventual 20-point victory.

The Miners were at home to the Thunder at Selkirk Stadium in Round 11 of the NBL1 South with Keilor going up eight during the first term and still leading 19-15 by the end of one.

Keilor's lead did get out to seven points in the second quarter before still being up 38-33 by half-time and they then blew the game wide open in the third quarter.

The Thunder went on a 12-0 run to see their lead grow out to 19 points, and the lead grew to 20 during the fourth period before they went on to record the 88-68 victory.

The win improved Keilor to a 4-10 record on the season while Ballarat is now 8-7 following the defeat.

The major difference was the shooting of the two teams with Keilor going at 48.1 per cent from the field and Ballarat 35.2 per cent.

Kian Dennis delivered 26 points and eight rebounds for Keilor with Tyler Kidd contributing 14 points, Rhyss Lewis 13 points and four rebounds, Cirkook Riak 12 points and four boards, and Jacob Lampkin 11 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.

Jalon Miller ended up with 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Miners with Preston Bungei adding 12 points and 10 boards, David Crisp nine points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals, and Deng Gak eight points and four boards.

 

DANDENONG RANGERS 75 lost to KILSYTH COBRAS 103

The Kilsyth Cobras delivered a commanding performance virtually from the outset to end up beating the Dandenong Rangers by 28 points on the road on Saturday night.

The Rangers played host to the Cobras at Dandenong Basketball Stadium in Round 11 of the NBL1 South and Kilsyth didn’t waste much time flexing their muscles.

The Cobras scored 10 straight points during the first quarter on their way to opening up a 17-point advantage and still leading 36-20 by quarter-time.

They maintained that edge the rest of the way and gradually kept building on it to lead by 19 points during the second quarter, 26 during the third and 28 by the final buzzer for the 103-75 victory.

The result improves Kilsyth to a 9-6 record on the season while with the defeat Dandenong slips to 4-11.

It was a hot shooting night from the Cobras who went at 55.4 per cent from the field while drilling 15/34 from three-point territory at 44.1 per cent. The Rangers went at 46.2 per cent from the floor and hit 7/16 from beyond the arc.

Corey Jeffs delivered 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Kilsyth while knocking down 5/11 from downtown.

Deng Deng added 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists, Adrian Tomada 16 points and five assists, Jamie Ahale 13 points and two assists, Trey Moses 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, and Ben Ursich eight points, two boards and two assists.

Deng Puoch produced 30 points and seven rebounds for Dandenong despite the loss while he shot 11/17 from the field, 4/5 from three-point range and 4/4 at the charity stripe.

Declan Soukup added nine points and eight assists, Ellis Biggar nine points, Nicolas Tata nine points and three rebounds, and Lawson Eales seven points, seven rebounds and three assists.
