NBL1 South Recap | Saturday Men's Round 12

There were Saturday night Round 12 NBL1 South Men's wins for the Hobart Chargers, Bendigo Braves, Ringwood Hawks, Frankston Blues, Geelong Supercats, Keilor Thunder, Kilsyth Cobras, North West Tasmania Thunder and Mount Gambier Pioneers.

There were Saturday night Round 12 NBL1 South Men's wins for the Hobart Chargers, Bendigo Braves, Ringwood Hawks, Frankston Blues, Geelong Supercats, Keilor Thunder, Kilsyth Cobras, North West Tasmania Thunder and Mount Gambier Pioneers.

Round 12 in the NBL1 South Men's competition began on Friday night with two matches in Tasmania which saw the Hobart Chargers defeat the Diamond Valley Eagles 100-71 and the Knox Raiders beat the North West Tasmania Thunder 69-50.

Then on Saturday night, the Hobart Chargers maintained their hold on top spot with a second win inside 24 hours beating the Knox Raiders at home 103-83.

Harry Froling delivered another 30 points and 11 rebounds for the Chargers while Jacob Foy top-scored for Knox with 20 points.

The Bendigo Braves continued their strong form too at home to the Sandringham Sabres coming away with the 81-67 victory.

Luke Rosendale delivered 21 points with four three-pointers for Bendigo while Dion Prewster put up 21 points, six rebounds and four assists for Sandringham.

The Ringwood Hawks scored a road win on Saturday night when they defeated the Casey Cavaliers 89-80.

Tim Guers finished with 26 points and seven rebounds in the win for Ringwood while Davo Hickey delivered 33 points and six boards for the Cavs.

It was a thriller at Selkirk Stadium with the Frankston Blues ending up beating the Ballarat Miners 87-84.

Daniel Trist stood out for Frankston with 29 points and 10 rebounds with Koen Sapwell putting up 19 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals for Ballarat.

The Geelong Supercats held off the fast finishing Dandenong Rangers for the 100-96 win away from home in Round 12 NBL1 South action.

Isaac Turner finished with 27 points for the Supercats, Demarcus Gatlin 24, Owen Odigie 21 and Gabe Hadley 20. Deng Puoch produced 28 points and nine rebounds for Dandenong.

It was another tight affair at Eltham High School with the Keilor Thunder holding out the Eltham Wildcats for the 72-69 victory.

Tyler Kidd delivered 23 points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals for Keilor while Mitch Dance put up 16 points and six boards for Eltham.

The Kilsyth Cobras started on fire at home to the Waverley Falcons on Saturday night before holding on for the 100-89 win.

Adrian Tomada top-scored for Kilsyth with 26 points to go with 13 rebounds, nine assists and three steals while hitting four triples. Tristan Forsyth delivered 29 points and 14 rebounds for Waverley.

It was a commanding win for the North West Tasmania Thunder at home on Saturday night with the 90-61 win over the Diamond Valley Eagles.

Sean Macdonald starred for North West with 23 points with Joel Capetola finished with 13 points for Diamond Valley.

The Mount Gambier Pioneers built up a big lead early and maintained that advantage the rest of the way to beat the Nunawading Spectres 80-69.

Nick Marshall delivered 25 points with four three-pointers in the win for Mount Gambier while Jack Gandolfo put up 19 points for Nunawading.

Round 12 will wrap up on Sunday afternoon with the Bendigo Braves hosting the Casey Cavaliers while the Waverley Falcons will be taking on the Melbourne Tigers and Keilor Thunder will face the Frankston Blues.

HOBART CHARGERS 103 defeated KNOX RAIDERS 83

The Hobart Chargers kept their hot form going with an impressive 20-point win against the Knox Raiders at home on Saturday night.

Coming off beating the Diamond Valley Eagles by 29 points on Friday night, the Chargers backed up on Saturday against a Raiders team at Southern Tasmania Netball Centre who started their weekend in the Apple Isle with a win over the North West Tasmania Thunder.

It didn’t take long for Hobart to assert their authority, though, to lead by 10 points at quarter-time before going on a 14-0 run in the second term to open up a 23-point advantage.

The Chargers continued on scoring seven straight points again in the third term to see that lead grow to 31 points and it was only a 10-0 fourth quarter run from the Raiders that brought the final scoreline to 103-83 in favour of Hobart.

The victory improves the Chargers to a 14-3 record on top of the NBL1 South while the Raiders are now 9-8 following the defeat.

It was a remarkable dominance on the glass from Hobart as they pulled in 54 rebounds to 26 including 16 at the offensive end to five. Both teams shot well from deep with the Raiders hitting 16/40 and the Chargers 12/29.

Harry Froling had another standout showing for the Chargers compiling 30 points, 11 rebounds and three assists with Jamar Sandifer adding 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

AJ Harris added 15 points, three rebounds and three assists with Ole Angerstein contributing 13 points and six boards, Jack Stanwix nine points and three assists, and Jarred Bairstow eight points and 11 rebounds.

Jacob Foy put up 20 points and four rebounds for Knox while connecting on 6/9 from beyond the arc.

Dylan Hare added 18 points and four rebounds, Reuben Te Rangi 13 points, Alex Robinson 11 points and five rebounds, and Austin Shelley six points.

 

BENDIGO BRAVES 81 defeated SANDRINGHAM SABRES 67

The Bendigo Braves built up a solid first half lead and maintained that advantage on the way to a 14-point home victory on Saturday night against the Sandringham Sabres.

Bendigo's form has been building nicely throughout the season under the coaching of Stephen Black as they prepared to host the Sabres at Red Energy Arena on Saturday evening.

The Braves started well to open up an 11-point lead during the opening quarter and to still be on top 24-16 by the end of one.

Bendigo continued their control to lead by as much as 18 points in the second term and went into the half-time break leading Sandringham 48-35.

Things remains even throughout the second half but the Sabres couldn’t make too many inroads with the Braves ending up winning 81-67.

The Braves pulled down 46 rebounds to 33 for the night while shooting 50.7 per cent from the floor opposed to 34.9 from Sandringham. They also hit 10/26 from downtown while the Sabres did well from deep going 10/30.

The victory improves the Braves to a 9-6 record on the season to be hot on the heels of a Sabres team who are now 10-6.

Luke Rosendale delivered 21 points and two steals for Bendigo while connecting on 4/8 from beyond the arc.

Kuany Kuany added 14 points and five rebounds, Jake Lloyd 16 points and three boards, Mitch Clarke 12 points, nine assists and five rebounds, and Sidy Djitte 12 points, 25 boards and three assists.

Dion Prewster produced 21 points, six rebounds and four assists for Sandringham but they dearly missed his New Zealand teammate Tohi Smith-Milner who is at the Asia Cup in Indonesia.

Shea Ili also finished with 19 points and four rebounds for the Sabres, and Tyrone Simos-Primerano eight points and three boards.

 

CASEY CAVALIERS 80 lost to RINGWOOD HAWKS 89

The Ringwood Hawks started on fire and that ended up being the difference in their eventual nine-point victory away to the Casey Cavaliers on Saturday night.

The Cavs were at home at Casey Stadium to the Hawks in Saturday night's Round 12 NBL1 South action, and it was Ringwood who started strongly.

Ringwood put together a run of 12 straight points during the opening term to lead by as much as 14, and still to be on top 27-16 at quarter-time.

That proved to be the major difference in the contest with the Hawks going up 17 during the second term before leading 47-37 by the half-time break.

They were able to maintain a double-figure advantage throughout the second half on the way to the eventual 89-80 victory.

The result improves Ringwood to a 9-7 record on the season while Casey is now 5-10.

It was a hot shooting performance from Ringwood as they went 53.6 per cent from the field opposed to 38.9 from Casey.

Tim Guers produced another standout showing for the Hawks with 26 points and seven rebounds while hitting 4/6 from beyond the three-point line.

Shaun Clarke added 15 points and three rebounds, Emmett Naar 13 points, eight assists and five boards, Matthew Roberts eight points, Jack Roberts eight points and four rebounds, and Kyle Daggett eight points, 13 boards and three assists.

Davo Hickey did all he could to try and lift the Cavaliers with 33 points, six rebounds and three assists on 12/21 shooting.

Jordan Bell added 19 points and 14 rebounds, Ben Waterhouse seven points, and Matt Donlan seven points.

 

BALLARAT MINERS 84 lost to FRANKSTON BLUES 87

It was a thriller on Saturday night at Selkirk Stadium with the Frankston Blues ending up beating the Ballarat Miners by three points.

It was a tight contest throughout the evening with Ballarat making the first break to be up seven during the opening quarter on the way to a 24-21 lead by the end of one.

The Miners did manage to open up a game high 10-point lead during the second term, but Frankston scored six straight points themselves to stay in touch and by half-time it was Ballarat leading 48-42.

The Blues then worked their way on top during the third period including going on an 8-0 run and then by three quarter-time scores were all tied at 69-69.

The stage was set for a terrific finish with a couple of dunks early in the fourth quarter from Preston Bungei putting Ballarat up six. However, Frankston hit the next six points to level scores again before Dillon Stith drained a triple with two minutes to go to put the Blues up three.

That proved the biggest shot of the game but the biggest play of the night was a block from Adrio Bailey on Bungei who was attempting a three in the dying seconds that would have tied scores if it fell.

That meant the Blues scored the 87-84 victory which improves them to 9-7 on the season while the heartbreaking loss leaves the Miners 8-8.

Daniel Trist finished the night with 29 points and 10 rebounds for Frankston on an efficient 10/14 shooting from the floor and 8/11 at the foul line.

Adrio Bailey ended up with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Will Peirce 11 points and three boards, Dillon Stith 11 points and three rebounds, Lucas Barker 10 points, 13 assists and nine boards, and Igor Hadziomerovic eight points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Koen Sapwell top-scored for Ballarat with 19 points, six assists, five rebounds and three assists, Deng Gak 15 points and six boards, Nic Pozoglou 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals, Preston Bungei 11 points, six boards and three assists, and Zack Dunmore 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.

 

DANDENONG RANGERS 96 lost to GEELONG SUPERCATS 100

The Geelong Supercats built up a big lead early and then held off the fast finishing Dandenong Rangers late for the four-point road win on Saturday night.

The Rangers were at home to the Supercats at Dandenong Basketball Stadium in Round 12 NBL1 South action and it was a high-scoring opening with the home team leading 29-24 by quarter-time.

Geelong was able to build some momentum through the second period, though, outscoring the Rangers 27 points to 16 to head into the half-time break on top 51-45.

The Supercats built on that momentum in the third term by going on a 10-0 run on the way to building a 20-point lead but the Rangers refused to go away.

They scored 15 straight points in the fourth quarter but the Supercats just managed to hang on for the eventual 100-96 victory.

The result improves the Supercats to a 10-6 record on the season while the Rangers are now 4-12 following the defeat on their home floor.

Isaac Turner finished with 27 points for Geelong while hitting five three-pointers with Demarcus Gatlin contributing 24 points, 11 boards, four assists, three steals and two blocks.

Owen Odigie contributed 21 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists, and Gabe Hadley 20 points, five boards and five assists.

Deng Puoch ended up top-scoring for Dandenong with 28 points, nine rebounds and three assists while hitting 4/7 from beyond the arc.

Jacob Davison added 15 points and six assists, Max Richards 14 points and five rebounds, Lawson Eales 13 points and six boards, Calvin Eng 12 points and four rebounds, and Ellis Biggar nine points and five boards.

 

ELTHAM WILDCATS 69 lost to KEILOR THUNDER 72

The Keilor Thunder claimed a thrilling three-point victory away from home against the Eltham Wildcats on Saturday night.

The Wildcats played host to the Thunder at Eltham High School but it was Keilor who made the flying start going on an 8-0 run to lead by 10 during the first quarter, and to be up 16-8 by quarter-time.

The Thunder continued that momentum throughout the second period with another 10-0 run to open up a 20-point lead before going into the half-time interval leading 38-21.

Only scoring 21 points in the first half was hardly ideal from Eltham on their home floor, but they came out a different outfit from the break and scored 12 straight points in the third quarter to end up putting up 29 points to 11.

That saw the Wildcats take a 50-49 lead into three quarter-time and the lead continued to seesaw throughout the fourth period until baskets from Mitch Dance and Sam Short helped the Wildcats to a five-point edge with two minutes to play.

However, Keilor weren’t going away and Jacob Lampkin and Rhyss Lewis brought them back within a point before Tyler Kidd pulled off a steal and finished on the break to give them the one-point lead.

Kidd then hit two free-throws to seal the 72-69 win for Keilor to see them improve to 6-10 on the season with Eltham falling to 4-12 as a result of the narrow defeat.

On top of the game winning last four points, Tyler Kidd finished with 23 points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals for Keilor with Cirkook Riak adding 14 points, four boards, two assists and two steals.

Jacob Lampkin added 12 points, 16 rebounds and four assists, Kian Dennis 10 points and four boards, and Rhyss Lewis seven points.

Mitch Dance put up 16 points and six rebounds for Eltham with Josh Sykes contributing 14 points and 13 boards, Sam Whelan nine points and two steals, and Sam Short seven points, eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

 

KILSYTH COBRAS 100 defeated WAVERLEY FALCONS 89

The Kilsyth Cobras built up a 10-point lead in the first quarter and went on to beat the Waverley Falcons by 11 points at home on Saturday night.

The Cobras played host to the Falcons at Kilsyth Sports Centre in NBL1 South Round 12 action with the home team delivering a dominant first term.

The Cobras went on an 11-0 scoring run to end up leading by as much as 13 points to end up scoring 34-24 by the end of one.

Kilsyth kept that momentum going in the second term with another run of scoring eight straight points before opening up an 18-point lead, and then to still hold a 57-39 advantage by the half-time break.

The lead for the Cobras got out to as much as 21 points during the third quarter but then the Falcons threw everything at a fightback from there.

They were able to get back within five points late with a bucket to Tristan Forsyth with under a minute to go, but Kilsyth managed to steady for the eventual 100-89 victory.

The result saw the Cobras improve to an 11-6 record on the season to hold onto their top four position while Waverley slips to 8-7 following the defeat.

Adrian Tomada ended the evening with 26 points, 13 rebounds, nine assists and three steals for Kilsyth on the back of shooting 9/15 from the field, 4/7 from downtown and 4/4 at the foul line.

Deng Deng added 20 points and 11 rebounds, Ben Ursich 18 points and two boards, Corey Jeffs 14 points and five assists, and Trey Moses 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Tristan Forsyth ended the evening with 29 points and 14 rebounds for Waverley with Dexter Kernich-Drew contributing 19 points and six assists, Durrell McDonald 10 points and three boards, Bennie Lewis nine points, and Jake Heath eight points and four rebounds.

 

NORTH WEST TASMANIA THUNDER 90 defeated DIAMOND VALLEY EAGLES 61

The North West Tasmania Thunder hit back from their Friday night loss to beat the Diamond Valley Eagles at home on Saturday by 29 points.

Both teams played on Friday night with the Thunder losing to the Knox Raiders by 19 points at home while the Eagles began their weekend in Tasmania losing to the Hobart Chargers by 29.

So both teams were motivated to hit back at Devonport Recreation Centre on Saturday night and by quarter-time they couldn’t be separated with scores locked at 18-apiece.

However, North West was able to open up a handy lead on the back of an 8-0 scoring run in the second quarter to go into half-time leading 48-39.

They turned that into a 13-point lead during the third quarter and then blew the game wide open with 30 points to 13 in the fourth term to lead by as much as 31 and end up winning 90-61.

The victory improves the Thunder to an 8-9 record on the season while with the loss Diamond Valley is now 7-10.

The major difference proved to be the three-point shooting with North West hitting 17/41 as a team opposed to 5/18. They also took 24 extra field goals for the game on the back of 18 offensive rebounds to 11, and forcing the Eagles into 24 turnovers.

Sean Macdonald delivered 23 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win for the Thunder while Joe Chilcott contributed 15 points and five boards, Fabijan Krslovic 11 points and six rebounds, and Jacob Furphy 10 points and five boards.

Joel Capetola top-scored for Diamond Valley with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists with BJ Symons adding 12 points and four rebounds, Ben Allen 11 points and eight boards, and Ngor Manyang eight points, six rebounds and three assists.

 

MOUNT GAMBIER PIONEERS 80 defeated NUNAWADING SPECTRES 69

The Mount Gambier Pioneers maintained their hold on a top two NBL1 South position with an 11-point win against the Nunawading Spectres.

The Pioneers played host to the Spectres on Saturday night at The Ice House and the home team started on fire by going on a 10-0 run during the opening term.

That turned into a 15-point lead for Mount Gambier with them on top 27-15 by the end of the first quarter.

The Pioneers were able to maintain that advantage the rest of the evening on their home floor to still lead by 10 points at half-time, 13 at three quarter-time and to end up winning 89-69.

Mount Gambier remains in second position in the NBL1 South standings as a result of the win at 12-4 while with the loss Nunawading is now 6-10.

Nick Marshall produced another 25 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win for Mt Gambier on the back of shooting 10/18 from the field and 4/7 from three-point range.

Michael Harris added 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Pioneers, Tom Kubank 15 points and two boards, and Clevon Brown nine points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Jack Gandolfo delivered 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals with 3/6 shooting from beyond the arc for Nunawading.

Dain Swetalla also finished with 17 points and six rebounds, CJ Asuncion-Byrd 13 points and four boards, and Jordan Geer eight points.
