Louise Brown delivered 26 points and 21 rebounds in a big win for the Frankston Blues in the NBL1 South while their men beat the Eltham Wildcats to stay top with Jack Davidson catching fire for the Ballarat Miners and Chris Galbreath inspiring a big finish for the Kilsyth Cobras.

The women's results on Saturday night saw the Geelong United Supercats beating the Dandenong Rangers 92-84 while the Sandringham Sabres beat the Casey Cavaliers 96-69, the Kilsyth Cobras defeated the Nunawading Spectres 48-43, and the Launceston Tornadoes downed the Ballarat Miners 82-73.

The Ringwood Hawks also beat the Mount Gambier Pioneers 99-77, the Knox Raiders prevailed 89-58 against the Keilor Thunder, the Frankston Blues defeated the Eltham Wildcats 79-71, and the Hobart Chargers downed the Diamond Valley Eagles 89-67.

The men's match ups saw the Miners beat the North West Tasmania Thunder 102-81 while the Supercats downed the Rangers 89-73, the Sabres beat the Cavaliers 74-62, the Cobras defeated the Spectres 90-85, and the Pioneers prevailed 105-98 against the Hawks.

The Raiders also beat the Thunder 103-69 with the Blues defeating the Wildcats 90-78 and the Eagles downing the Chargers 96-86.

WOMEN

Supercats keep winning despite Puoch's big night

The Geelong United Supercats continued to build momentum this NBL1 South season coming out of the break with a 92-84 home win against the Dandenong Rangers.

The Supercats had won their past two matches heading into the King's Birthday long weekend and seven of their past eight games heading into hosting the Rangers at The Arena on Saturday.

Geelong started strongly on its home floor with 25 points to 15 in the opening quarter and leading by as much as 12 points.

Even though Dandenong did have a brief flurry to grab the lead quickly in the second term, the Supercats responded to still be leading 49-43 at the main break.

Geelong then added another 22 points to 16 in the third stanza and would lead by as much as 18 in the fourth before going on to win by eight against the fast finishing Rangers.

The victory is a third straight for the Supercats who improve to a 10-4 record while the Rangers have suffered consecutive losses at 7-9.

Agnieszka Skobel led the way in the win for Geelong finishing with 24 points, four steals and three assists while shooting 10/15 from the floor.

Chantel Horvat also delivered 21 points, eight boards and four assists, Sarah Elsworthy 21 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists, Eve Braslis 11 points, four boards and three assists, and Ella Tofaeono 10 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.

Despite the loss for Dandenong, Nyadiew Puoch produced a huge performance with 37 points to go with nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks on 13/22 shooting from the floor, 3/5 from downtown and 8/11 from the charity stripe. 

Luisa Fakalata added 17 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists, and Briahna Whatman 17 points, three boards and three assists.

Sabres keep winning to close in on top eight spot

The Sandringham Sabres continued their charge towards an NBL1 South playoff spot with a third consecutive win by beating the Casey Cavaliers 96-69 on Saturday night.

The Sabres had won their past two matches heading into the King's Birthday long weekend and then were able to keep their run going against the Cavs at Casey Stadium.

Sandringham only managed to lead by a point at quarter-time but then blew that advantage out to 13 in the second stanza on the back of a 12-0 run.

The Sabres were still on top 41-34 by half-time before Casey fired back impressively with 28 points to 20 in the third period to even lead by a point at three quarter-time.

However, from there Sandringham produced a phenomenal fourth quarter with 35 points to just eight from the Cavaliers to end up winning by 27 points to improve to an 8-8 record in the process.

Georgia Pineau produced 24 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals for Sandringham while Klara Wischer delivered 20 points and seven boards, Funda Nakkasoglu 20 points and four rebounds, and Britt Smart 17 points, nine assists, five rebounds and three steals.

Lauren Van Kleunen finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Casey with Rachel Bell adding 17 points, seven assists and four boards, Caitlin Cunningham 10 points, two rebounds and two assists, and Steph Blicavs 10 points and four rebounds.

Cobras prevail over Spectres in low-scoring grind

The two teams might have only combined to score 91 points for the game but it was a tight affair with the Kilsyth Cobras ending up prevailing 48-43 against the Nunawading Spectres.

The highest scoring quarter of the night was the first with Nunawading leading 16-15 by quarter-time.

With the low scoring nature of the contest, no more than seven points ever separated the two teams with the Spectres still leading by one at half-time before the Cobras put up 15 points to eight in the third period.

Kilsyth would end up leading by seven in the fourth stanza before ending up winning by five to improve to a 5-10 record on the season with back-to-back wins. The Spectres slip to 7-8 with consecutive defeats.

Isis Lopes produced 15 points, six rebounds and two assists in the win for the Cobras with Georgia Booth adding 15 points, seven boards and two steals, and Nikita Young nine points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Alice Kunek finished with another eight points and 10 rebounds for Nunawading despite shooting 3/15 while Rachel Antoniadou finished with eight points, six boards and four steals, Devon Brookshire eight points and eight rebounds, and Emma Pearce seven points and six boards.

 

Tornadoes beat Miners minus Froling

The Launceston Tornadoes began their double-header on the road this weekend on a winning note beating the Ballarat Miners 82-73.

The Tornadoes came into the weekend having lost last up two weeks ago to the Frankston Blues while the Miners had broken through for their third win of the season against the Melbourne Tigers.

Both teams had their turn with the lead over the first half with Ballarat leading by a point at quarter-time and then Launceston on top by a point at half-time.

The Tornadoes began to pull away throughout the second half opening up a six-point lead in the third stanza and then leading by as much as 11 in the fourth before going on to win by nine.

The victory improves Launceston to a 6-9 record on the season before staying on the road to play Kilsyth on Sunday with Ballarat now 3-12 ahead of hosting Mount Gambier also on Sunday.

Olivia West led the charge in the win for a Tornadoes team minus Keeling Froling. West put up 26 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals on 8/14 shooting from the floor, 2/4 from beyond the arc and 8/8 at the charity stripe.

Riley Lupfer added 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals, Micah Simpson 15 points, six assists and four rebounds, and Macey Crawford 15 points, six assists and four boards.

 Abbey Wehrung once again top-scored for Ballarat with 19 points to go with six assists and three rebounds on 4/8 shooting from beyond the three-point line.

Emma Karamovic also had 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Tayanna Jones 14 points, eight boards and two blocks, Milly Sharp eight points and 11 rebounds, and Kristy Rinaldi eight points, nine boards and two assists.

 

Full strength Hawks too much for Pioneers

The Ringwood Hawks welcomed back Marena Whittle and put together a dominant performance to beat the Mount Gambier Pioneers 99-77 at home on Saturday night.

Ringwood was still clinging to a place in the top eight despite having lost two of their previous three matches, but they will be looking to build some momentum now with Whittle back in the line-up joining Ariel Jones and Marta Hermida.

They proved too strong for Mount Gambier on Saturday night and that was a Pioneers team arriving on a five-game winning streak of their own.

While Ringwood was leading by a point at quarter-time, it wasn’t until the second stanza when the Hawks began to take control opening up a 10-point advantage.

The Hawks then continued to take over further to lead by as much as 20 points in the third quarter, by 26 in the fourth and to end up winning by 22.

The reigning champs improved to a 9-6 record as a result of the win while Mount Gambier is now 10-4 with a five-game winning streak coming to an end.

Reigning Grand Final MVP Marena Whittle was terrific for Ringwood with 22 points, nine rebounds and nine assists with Ariel Jones contributing 20 points, four boards and three steals.

Ella Ogier also ended up with 16 points and three rebounds, Zoe Jenkins 13 points and two boards, and Marta Hermida 12 points, eight assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Perth Lynx WNBL signing Miela Goodchild put up another 25 points and six rebounds for Mount Gambier with Cassandra Brown adding 17 points, seven boards and three assists, Haliegh Reinoehl 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Sherrie Calleia nine points, four boards and four dimes.

Froling, Raiders overpower Thunder in second half

With Alicia Froling a dominant force and receiving plenty of support, the Knox Raiders consolidated their top eight position with Saturday night's 89-58 home win against the Keilor Thunder.

Knox came into the round clinging to eighth position as they took on a Keilor team who were sliding out of playoff contention setting up Saturday's match up at the State Basketball Centre.

It didn’t take the Raiders long to take control of the contest as they raced out to a 15-point lead in the opening quarter to still be on top 23-14 by the end of one.

Keilor did fight back in impressive fashion, though, scoring 17 consecutive points to suddenly grab the lead during the second term before Knox steadied to still lead 38-33 by intermission.

It was then all the Raiders in the second half as they outscored the Thunder 51 points to 25 to cruise to the eventual 31-point victory to improve to 9-7 on the season.

Keilor slipped further from the top eight hunt with a second straight loss to be 4-11.

Alicia Froling was again the star of the night for Knox with 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists but she received some impressive support.

Kiera Rowe added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists, Aneta Bandilovska 13 points, five assists and three rebounds, Leah Santomaggio nine points on three triples, and Emilie Hesseldal seven points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Juna Umezawa ended up with 13 points and nine rebounds for Keilor while Zoe Shaw scored 10 points with Lana Hollingsworth adding nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks, and Eva Kristjansdottir eight points and eight boards.

Brown dominates as Frankston overruns Eltham

The Eltham Wildcats started on fire but it was the Frankston Blues who finished the better with Louise Brown dominant on the way to the 79-71 victory.

Both teams are locked over a battle for a top four position in the NBL1 South with each side on significant winning streaks coming into the Saturday night clash at Dreamstreet Lending Arena.

By quarter-time, it was the visiting Eltham who had got the best of the start to lead by 10 points with that advantage for the Wildcats stretching to 12 points in the second term, and 15 in the third.

Eltham was still on top 59-54 by three quarter-time, but it was then all the Blues in the fourth quarter as they put up 25 points to 12 to have turned that 15-point deficit into an eventual eight-point win at home.

Frankston has won five straight as a result to improve to an 11-4 record while the six-game winning run of Eltham came to an end with them 8-6.

Louise Brown had a dominant showing in the win for the Blues with 26 points, 21 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks but she also had plenty of support.

Chloe Bibby produced 26 points and six rebounds, Micaela Cocks 22 points, six boards and four assists, and Tori Jackson five points and three assists. Ella Batish also dished out seven assists.

Hailey Leidel top-scored for Eltham with 25 points, four rebounds and two steals with Louise Forsyth putting up 17 points, eight boards and three assists, and Bec Pizzey 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Chargers take control to knock off Eagles

The Hobart Chargers kept their NBL1 South playoff hopes alive beating the Diamond Valley Eagles 89-67 to start their double-header on the road on Saturday night.

Diamond Valley started well at home to Hobart opening up an early seven-point lead but by quarter-time scores were tied at 14-14.

The Chargers began to take over in the second stanza with 26 points to 21 which saw the visitors leading 40-35 by the main break.

It was then all Hobart throughout the second as the lead grew to 16 points in the third quarter and 25 in the fourth on the back of a 13-0 run with the Chargers ending up winning by 22.

The victory improves Hobart to a 6-9 record having snapped a three-game losing streak before taking on the second placed Waverley Falcons on Sunday. The Eagles remain outside the top eight with the loss at 7-8 having lost three in-a-row.

Cori Coleman delivered 26 points, eight rebounds and two assists in a spectacular performance for the Chargers while shooting 9/11 from the field and 6/7 from three-point land.

Kayla Steindl was a dominant force too with 23 points, 17 rebounds and three assists with Paige Bradley adding 16 points, 11 assists, three boards and two steals, and Sarah O'Neill 11 points and nine rebounds.

Sophie Burrows top-scored for Diamond Valley with 21 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals with Jade Dunne adding 16 points, three assists and two boards, and Jennie Rintala eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.

MEN

Gatlin lifts Supercats to crucial win over Rangers

The Geelong Supercats scored an important win on Saturday night to stay in the playoff race in the NBL1 South beating the Dandenong Rangers 89-73.

The Supercats had lost their past three matches heading into the King's Birthday long weekend before hosting the bottom placed Rangers at The Arena on Saturday.

Dandenong was looking for a fourth win of the season too and started well away from home to lead 18-17 by quarter-time.

The lead for the Rangers grew to as much as 10 points in the second quarter too but by half-time Geelong had been able to assume the 40-38 lead.

The Supercats took charge coming out of half-time, though, as they outscored the Rangers 24 points to 17 in the third quarter, and 25 to 18 in the fourth to end up winning by 16.

The victory stops the losing slide for Geelong to improve them to a 7-7 record while Dandenong stays in bottom place at 3-13.

DeMarcus Gatlin produced a standout showing in the win for the Supercats with 28 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals on the back of 11/19 from the floor and 3/6 from downtown.

George Blagojevic added 24 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, and Gabe Hadley 15 points, nine boards, four assists and three steals.

Mike Amius finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and two blocks for Dandenong while Jesse Ghee put up 17 points, seven boards and five assists, and Jacob Eyman 11 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.

Pineau fires Sabres to win over Cavs 

The Sandringham Sabres set the win up early and Dane Pineau was a dominant force in the eventual 74-62 road win against the Casey Cavaliers.

Sandringham put its six-game winning streak on the line against the Cavs at Casey Stadium on Saturday night, and it was the home team who raced out to an early nine-point advantage.

However, the Sabres fired back with 12 consecutive points to be leading 22-19 by quarter-time.

Sandringham then blew the game wide open in the second period with 29 points to 13 which saw the lead get out to as much as 21 points with the Sabres in control 51-32 at the main break.

The Sabres maintained that advantage throughout the second half before a late 10-0 run from the Cavaliers.

Sandringham still went on to win by 12 points to improve to a 12-4 record to maintain a top four spot with seven straight wins. Casey has now lost four in-a-row to hold a 3-12 record.

Dane Pineau was terrific in the win for the Sabres with the NBL centre putting up 20 points and 17 rebounds on 9/14 shooting.

Ben Ayre put up 13 points, five assists and four rebounds, Campbell Blogg 12 points and four boards, and CJ Asuncion-Byrd eight points, four assists, two rebounds and two steals.

Patrick Emilien delivered 25 points and eight rebounds for Casey while Preston Bungei added 10 points and three assists, and Nathan Frost 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Huge Cobras finish sees them overrun Spectres

It took a massive fourth quarter for the Kilsyth Cobras to overrun the Nunawading Spectres for the 90-85 victory at home on Saturday night.

With Nunawading trying to break into the top four in the NBL1 South and Kilsyth trying to stay in the playoff race, the stage was set for a terrific contest at Kilsyth Sports Centre.

Nunawading were threatening to open up a handy gap leading by eight points in the second quarter but Kilsyth stayed in touch to keep the Spectres advantage to just 51-46 at half-time.

However, it was in the third quarter where Nunawading took charge to open up a 14-point lead, and to still be 11 points up in the fourth to throw down the challenge to Kilsyth.

And the Cobras were up to the task including going on an 11-0 run from there and then ending up outscoring the Spectres 25 points to 10 to go from 11 points down to winning by five.

The win snaps a three-game losing run for Kilsyth who improve to 6-9 with Nunawading missing the chance to break into the top four now to be 9-6 with back-to-back defeats.

Chris Galbreath was superb for Kilsyth producing 29 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks on 14/25 shooting from the field.

Adrian Tomada added 27 points and six assists, Jamie Ahale 17 points, three rebounds and three assists, and Mitch Dielemans seven points, three boards and two assists.

Jalen Gibbs produced 26 points and four rebounds for Nunawading while hitting 4/11 from downtown with Josh Tomasi contributing 16 points and eight boards, and Kingsley Box 10 points and six rebounds.

Daniel Baxter also had 10 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Jordan Geer 10 points, four boards and three assists.

Davidson helps lift Miners over Thunder

The sharp shooting Jack Davidson led the way as the Ballarat Miners delivered a big finish to beat the North West Tasmania Thunder 102-81 to enhance their playoff prospects.

The Miners were back home on Saturday at Selkirk Stadium looking to snap a two-game losing slide against a Thunder team also trying to lift their finals hopes.

While Ballarat did open up an eight-point lead in the first quarter, by the end of the opening period it was North West Tasmania with the one-point advantage.

Things remained tight over the next two quarters with no more than five points between the two teams with Ballarat leading 56-54 at half-time, and still 75-74 by three quarter-time.

However, it was all the Miners in the last quarter as they outscored the Thunder 27 points to seven to end up scoring the 21-point victory.

The win improves Ballarat to a 7-8 record on the season while the loss leaves the Thunder at 6-9.

Jack Davidson was instrumental in the win for Ballarat with 28 points, seven assists and four rebounds on shooting 5/8 from downtown.

Nic Pozoglou added 21 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, Tyler Rudolph 20 points, eight boards and two steals, Adam Thoseby 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Amos Brooks 10 points and four boards.

Sekou Sylla put up another 28 points, 11 rebounds and four assists on 11/15 shooting for North West Tasmania with Vionte Daniels adding 18 points and six assists, Tre Armstrong 14 points and five assists, and Joe Chilcott 12 points.

Pioneers keep momentum going with win over Hawks

The Mount Gambier Pioneers continue to build some momentum once more this NBL1 South season with the 105-98 win away to the Ringwood Hawks.

The Pioneers did come into the clash at The Rings having won their last two matches after a five-game losing streak but Ringwood weren’t going to make life easy for them.

The Hawks started well to lead by five points at quarter-time before scores were all square at 50-50 at the half-time interval. 

Mount Gambier began to take charge in the third quarter going on a 10-0 scoring run to open up a 13-point lead, and that would ultimately prove the difference as they held out the Hawks in the finish to win by seven.

The victory makes it three wins in-a-row for the Pioneers to improve them to 9-5 on the season with the Hawks slipping to 4-11 having lost four straight.

Jacob Lampkin fired for Mount Gambier with 27 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two blocks while shooting 11/17 from the floor.

Tom Kubank added 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Pioneers, Will Mayfield 16 points and three boards, and Austin Shelley 12 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Kyle Daggett ended up top-scoring for Ringwood with 25 points and 15 rebounds while Jonathan Lawton added 23 points and five assists, Adrien Sturt 19 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Harrison Sealey 18 points and three assists. 

Knox keep winning to maintain top two pace

The Knox Raiders made it four straight wins to tighten up the top two race further in the NBL1 South having defeated Keilor Thunder 103-69 at the State Basketball Centre.

The Raiders did need to keep winning to stay in touch with the top two teams but the Thunder came into the clash on their own three-game winning run attempting to break into the top eight.

Knox was able to open up a 12-point lead through the first quarter and then maintain that advantage throughout the evening, and build upon it.

The Raiders would end up leading by 14 points at half-time with that advantage growing to 20 points in the third stanza, and 34 in the fourth which would prove to be the final margin.

The victory is a fourth in-a-row for Knox with it improving them to a 12-4 record with Keilor's three-game winning run ending to keep them outside the top eight at 7-8.

Ke'Jhan Feagin continued his tremendous form for Knox with another 25 points, 10 assists and three rebounds on 10/13 shooting from the floor and 4/7 from beyond the arc.

Mason Peatling produced 19 points, six rebounds and two assists for the Raiders, Bailey Nunn 13 points, five assists and three boards, Austin Rapp 12 points and eight rebounds, and Wayne Stewart Jr 10 points and six boards.

William Jenkins III put up 24 points and seven rebounds for Keilor on 9/13 shooting including hitting all three of his attempts from beyond the arc.

Zac Triplett also ended up with 13 points and three assists, and Oliver Hayes-Brown 10 points and two rebounds.

Blues beat Wildcats in battle of top two teams

The Frankston Blues maintained top spot in the NBL1 South with Saturday night's home 90-78 victory against the second placed Eltham Wildcats.

The top two teams in the NBL1 South locked horns at Dreamstreet Lending Arena and in the end the experience of Brad Newley and Igor Hadziomerovic, and presence of Daniel Trist proved the difference.

Frankston opened up a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter with the lead for the Blues growing to 15 in the second term, 17 in the third and 20 in the fourth with them going on to beat the Wildcats by 12.

The victory improves Frankston to a 12-3 record to remain in first place in the NBL1 South standings having now won four in-a-row. Eltham has now lost two of its past three matches to slip to 10-4.

Brad Newley finished with 23 points, four rebounds and two assists for Frankston on the back of shooting 9/16 from the field.

Igor Hadziomerovic also delivered 20 points while Daniel Trist was a powerful force with 20 points, 14 rebounds and two assists.

Lachlan Barker also finished with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists, and Lucas Barker six points, seven assists, five boards and four steals.

Sydney Kings NBL championship winner Angus Glover finished with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists for Eltham while Owen Foxwell added 15 points and three boards, Sam Short 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, and Callum Dalton 12 points, seven boards and four assists.

Eagles beat Chargers to maintain top eight spot

Ngor Manyang fired once more for the Diamond Valley Eagles to lead them to a 96-86 victory at home against the Hobart Chargers.

The Eagles came into the weekend still clinging to eighth position in the NBL1 South despite having lost their last three matches ahead of hosting the defending champion Chargers who were trying to take that spot of Diamond Valley in the top eight.

Hobart then came out and started hot on Saturday night with 32 points to 21 in the first quarter and opening up a lead as big as 15 points.

Diamond Valley worked back into the contest in the second period to outscore the Chargers 29 points to 19 to cut the Hobart lead to 51-50 at the main break.

The Eagles were then able to take over throughout the second half leading by as much as seven points in the third quarter, and 10 in the fourth to end up winning by that 10-point margin.

The victory improves Diamond Valley to 8-7 on the season to stay in the top eight with Hobart remaining just outside at 7-8.

Ngor Manyang was the star of the evening for Diamond Valley with 22 points, seven rebounds and two assists on 8/16 shooting from the floor including 4/9 from behind the three-point line.

He received good support too with Mandrell Worthy putting up 19 points, four rebounds and two assists, Jock Perry 15 points, nine boards and three assists, BJ Symons 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Erik Kafritsas 14 points, four assists and three boards.

Despite the defeat, Devin Watson delivered 27 points for Hobart on 10/19 shooting from the field and 4/9 from three-point territory.

Sam McDaniel also had 19 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals, Callum Boucher 14 points and four boards, and Zach White 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.
