Sunday's Round 1 NBL1 South action saw a double-win afternoon for the Mount Gambier Pioneers and Knox Raiders while the Waverley Falcons and Ringwood Hawks traded wins.

Sunday's Round 1 NBL1 South action saw a double-win afternoon for the Mount Gambier Pioneers and Knox Raiders while the Waverley Falcons and Ringwood Hawks traded wins.

The three women's NBL1 South Sunday matches saw the Mount Gambier Pioneers beat the Nunawading Spectres 87-69, the Waverley Falcons defeat the Ringwood Hawks 81-72, and the Knox Raiders prevail 81-60 against Keilor Thunder.

Then in the men's contests, Mount Gambier beat Nunawading 104-94 while Ringwood defeated Waverley 81-71 and Knox defeated Keilor 88-73.

WOMEN

Pioneers make it a double win weekend

The Mount Gambier Pioneers continued their impressive opening weekend with an 87-69 road win against the Nunawading Spectres.

It was Nunawading's first game of the 2023 season hosting a Pioneers team fresh off beating the Sandringham Sabres on Saturday, and Mount Gambier kept that momentum going on Sunday.

It was still a tight affair most of the opening three quarters but the Pioneers pulled away with 23 points to 14 in the fourth to win by 18.

Miela Goodchild ultimately was the major difference between the two teams with 29 points, 13 rebounds and three assists for Mount Gambier.

Cassandra Brown also ended up with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals, Sherrie Calleia 16 points and three rebounds, Isabella Brancatisano 12 points, nine boards and four assists, and Haliegh Reinoehl 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Emma Pearce top-scored for Nunawading with 26 points and six rebounds with Rachel Brewster contributing 12 points and 10 boards, and Rachel Antoniadou 11 points and two assists.

Falcons knock off reigning champs at home

The Waverley Falcons opened up the NBL1 South season by beating the reigning champion Ringwood Hawks 81-72 at Waverley Basketball Centre on Sunday.

It was an impressive start to the season at home for Waverley capped off with a 30-point to 15 fourth quarter to overrun Ringwood and win by nine points.

While the Falcons did beat the defending NBL1 South champions, the Hawks are still to welcome back Marena Whittle and Marta Hermida into the line-up.

Amelia Todhunter ended up top-scoring in the win for the Falcons with 16 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals while draining 4/8 from three-point range.

Renae Mokrzycki added 16 points, four rebounds and three steals, Carley Ernst 12 points, seven boards and six assists, and Mia Parsons 12 points.

Piper Dunlop delivered 17 points and 12 rebounds for Ringwood with Zoe Jenkins contributing 16 points on 4/7 three-point shooting. Jacqui Trotto also had 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.

MVP Froling stars as Knox beat Keilor

The Knox Raiders opened their NBL1 South season in impressive style on Sunday afternoon beating the Keilor Thunder 81-60.

Both teams were playing their first game of the season at Keilor Stadium with the Raiders starting strongly on the back of a dominant showing from reigning league MVP Alicia Froling.

Knox had opened up a 45-24 lead by half-time and then went on to win the game by 21.

On the back of being MVP last season in the NBL1 South and then her WNBL season with Bendigo, Froling was tremendous for Knox with 37 points and 14 rebounds on 14/20 shooting.

Aneta Bandilovska added 10 points and four assists, Paige Burrows eight points, and Rachael Quirk eight points, four assists and three rebounds.

Jaz Salon top-scored for Keilor with 13 points while Shaunay Edmonds added 10 points.

MEN

Lampkins fires Pioneers to second win of opening weekend

The Mount Gambier Pioneers continued their perfect start to the NBL1 South season beating the Nunawading Spectres 104-94 on Sunday.

Mount Gambier opened the season with a win over the Sandringham Sabres before backing it up on the road again on Sunday to beat the Spectres by 10 largely on the back of delivering 33 points to 19 in the second quarter.

It was another impressive showing from the Pioneers with Jacob Lampkin putting up 31 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals while hitting 3/4 from downtown.

Nick Marshall backed up his hot shooting night on Saturday with another 28 points, six rebounds and six assists while Will Mayfield contributed 16 points and five boards, and Julian Pesava 11 points and eight rebounds.

Jalen Gibbs put up 28 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Spectres with Tristan Devers adding 15 points and Will Carius 14 to go with eight rebounds.

 

Lawton hits 30 and Hawks knock off Falcons

The Ringwood Hawks opened the NBL1 South season by beating the Waverley Falcons 81-71 on the road on Sunday.

Both teams were playing their first game of the 2023 season and it was a tight contest for three quarters. However, Ringwood pulled away with 28 points to 14 in the fourth period with 28 points to 14 to end up securing the 10-point triumph.

Jonathan Lawton delivered an impressive performance for Ringwood with 30 points and three rebounds on 11/20 shooting from the field and 7/8 from the foul line.

Kyle Daggett added 10 points and 10 boards, and Shaun Clarke nine points, four rebounds and two assists.

Dexter Kernich-Drew finished with 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals for Waverley with Dillon Stith contributing 13 points and nine boards, Jake Heath 13 points and three rebounds, and Tristan Forsyth 11 points and seven boards.

Knox too strong to open 2023 for Keilor

The Knox Raiders have got off to the perfect start to the NBL1 South season scoring an 88-73 road victory on Sunday against the Keilor Thunder.

Knox started strongly at Keilor Stadium with 20 points to 14 in the opening quarter and then it was the third quarter with 30 points to 13 where the Raiders secured the eventual 15-point victory.

Ke'Jhan Feagin put up 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists with 3/6 three-point shooting in the win for Knox while Deng Acouth contributed 19 points and nine rebounds, Austin Rapp 11 points and four boards, Mason Peatling 11 points and seven rebounds, and Dylan Hare 11 points and five boards.

Zac Triplett did what he could to lift Keilor with 23 points and seven rebounds on 3/6 shooting from beyond the arc with Will Jenkins III adding 13 points and nine boards, Oliver Hayes-Brown 12 points and six rebounds, and Theus Evan Wardlow 11 points and five assists.
