Sunday's NBL1 South women's action saw the Ringwood Hawks beat the Casey Cavaliers 80-73, Sandringham Sabres defeat the Knox Raiders 82-66, Geelong United Supercats down the Diamond Valley Eagles 73-67, and Eltham Wildcats defeat the Dandenong Rangers 81-61.

The Waverley Falcons also beat the Launceston Tornadoes 98-63 with the Hobart Chargers beating the Nunawading Spectres 87-74, Melbourne Tigers downing the Mount Gambier Pioneers 67-65, and the Frankston Blues winning 82-75 over the Ballarat Miners.

In the men's match ups, the Hawks beat the Cavs 104-85, the Raiders defeated the Sabres 87-76, the Supercats knocked off the Eagles 93-82, the Wildcats beat the Rangers 99-76 and the Falcons prevailed 91-89 against the North West Tasmania Thunder.

The Chargers beat the Spectres 89-77 with the Tigers beating the Pioneers 100-76 and the Blues downing the Miners 106-87.

Hawks deny Casey second win of weekend

The Casey Cavaliers couldn’t quite pull off their second win for the season this weekend with the Ringwood Hawks overcoming them 80-73 on Sunday.

The Cavs broke through for their first win of the season on Saturday night beating the Launceston Tornadoes ahead of taking on a Ringwood team still missing Marena Whittle and looking to bounce back from a loss on Saturday to the Knox Raiders.

Casey did start well, though, with 20 points to 17 in the opening period and they were still leading 41-38 by the half-time break.

The Hawks were looking to avoid consecutive defeats and responded by outscoring the Cavs 42 points to 32 in the second half to claim the seven-point win to improve to 6-2 on the season with Casey now 1-7.

New Hawks import Ariel Jones finished the afternoon with 26 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals in an exciting indication of what's to come when Whittle returns.

Shelby Britten added 21 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals for Ringwood, Toni Farnworth 15 points, five assists and four boards, Piper Dunlop eight points and nine rebounds, and Hailey Wynd eight points, three boards and two blocked shots.

Lauren Van Kleunen delivered 23 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots for the Cavaliers with Rachel Bell adding 21 points, four boards and two assists, Taylah Gillam 11 points and three rebounds, and Esra McGoldrick 10 points, 16 boards, four assists, three steals and three blocks. 

Rejuvenated Sabres snap Raiders' winning run

The Sandringham Sabres snapped the five-game winning streak of the Knox Raiders on Sunday with the 82-66 victory at the State Basketball Centre.

The change in fortunes immediately of the Sabres since making their coaching change has been significant and that continued on Sunday against a Raiders team who came into the clash on a five-game winning streak.

The Sabres parted ways with coach Jacqui O'Neill prior to last weekend and assistant Simon Giovannoni took them to a win over the Eltham Wildcats.

Kerryn Mitchell has now been appointed for the rest of the season and with her at the helm, they beat the Dandenong Rangers and kept the momentum rolling on Sunday against the Raiders.

Sandringham was on top 18-14 by the end of the opening quarter before extending the lead to five at half-time and then with 28 points to 17 in the final period they ran away with the 16-point victory.

The result improves the Sabres to a 5-4 record on the season with the three straight wins while Knox is now 6-2 with the five-match winning streak coming to an end.

Georgia Pineau produced a tremendous performance for Sandringham finishing with 23 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals including shooting 4/5 from beyond the three-point line.

Funda Nakkasoglu added 14 points, four boards, two assists and two steals, Morgan Ili 12 points and six rebounds, Britt Smart 11 points and three assists, and Klara Wischer nine points, 11 boards, four steals and two assists.

Alicia Froling did what she could to keep Knox in the contest with 31 points and 10 rebounds with Aneta Bandilovska adding 11 points, two boards and two assists, and Leah Santomaggio 10 points and two rebounds.

Supercats beat Eagles to continue growing form

The Geelong United Supercats continue to shrug off their slow start to the season with another 73-67 win on the road to the Diamond Valley Eagles.

The Supercats started the season losing their first two matches but now they have won four of their past five on the back of the win on the road on Sunday over the Eagles.

Geelong was fresh off the win against Mount Gambier the previous night while Diamond Valley had won its past two as well setting up a contest between two in-form teams.

It was a tight contest for three quarters and it was only the third period when Geelong United put a gap between the teams. The Supercats outscored the Eagles 22 points to 15 and that set up the eventual six-point win.

Geelong has now won four of the last five games to improve to 4-3 with Diamond Valley sitting at 4-4 following the loss.

Eve Braslis top-scored for the Supercats with 20 points, three rebounds and three steals while Ella Tofaeono added 18 points and 13 boards, Chantel Horvat 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists, and Sarah Elsworthy 10 points, seven boards, three steals and two assists.

Sophie Burrows finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists for Diamond Valley, Jennie Rintala 14 points and five boards, Allison Day 14 points and five rebounds, and Kara Tessari 12 points, two boards and two assists.

Leidel hits six threes in bounce back Eltham win

The Eltham Wildcats bounced back from a Saturday night loss to beat the Dandenong Rangers 81-61 on Sunday on their home floor.

Eltham lost to Nunawading on Saturday night while Dandenong also lost to Sandringham so both teams were looking for the bounce back on Sunday at Montmorency Secondary College.

The Wildcats were fired up to make amends and put up 26 points to nine in the first quarter. That set up the eventual win where they led by as much as 32 points and while the Rangers had a good last quarter, Eltham still cruised to the 20-point victory.

The result sees the Wildcats improve to a 3-5 record on the season with the Rangers slipping to 4-5.

Hailey Leidel was superb for Eltham with 31 points, six assists, three steals and three rebounds with 6/10 shooting from beyond the arc.

Louise Forsyth added 18 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists, and Ally Marshall eight points and four assists.

Luisa Fakalata top-scored for Dandenong with 13 points and six rebounds while Nyadiew Puoch contributed 11 points, four boards and two steals, and Amber Smith nine points and six rebounds.

Falcons stay perfect with win over Tornadoes

The Waverley Falcons maintained their perfect record this NBL1 South season beating the Launceston Tornadoes 98-63 at home on Sunday afternoon.

With the Tornadoes undertaking the road trip this weekend minus Keely Froling who is on national duties for the Australian 3x3 team in Israel, it was always going to be a challenge and it started with a 24-point loss to the previously winless Casey on Saturday.

After losing to a winless team, taking on the undefeated Falcons at Waverley Basketball Centre was a significant test, and that's how it panned out for the travelling Tornadoes.

Waverley put up 30 points to 20 in the opening quarter and continued from there to lead by as much as 41 points in the fourth term before settling on the 35-point victory.

The win improves the Falcons to a perfect 7-0 record this season after five rounds with Launceston slipping to 3-5.

Carley Ernst led the charge in the win for Waverley with 21 points and seven rebounds on 10/13 shooting, but she had plenty of help.

Maddi Utti contributed 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, Sophia Locantro 13 points and seven boards, Bec Cole 13 points and 12 assists, Amelia Todhunter 13 points and seven assists, and Renae Mokrzycki eight points and eight rebounds.

Macey Crawford top-scored for Launceston with 15 points and two assists while Riley Lupfer finished with 14 points, and Olivia West 14 points and five rebounds.

Steindl dominates in road win for Chargers in Nunawading

The Hobart Chargers wrapped up their road double with a bounce back 87-74 victory against the Nunawading Spectres.

Hobart suffered a rough 34-point defeat against the undefeated Bendigo Braves on Saturday night, but the Chargers shook that off upon arrival at Nunawading Basketball Centre on Sunday.

The Spectres were attempting to back up their win over the Eltham Wildcats the night before, but it was the Chargers who started the better with 22 points to 14 in the opening period.

Nunawading kept things close over the next two quarters but it was in the final term when Hobart pulled away with 22 points to 15 to secure the 13-point victory.

The result improves the Chargers to 3-5 on the season with the Spectres now 4-4.

Kayla Steindl continues to show that she could very well be ready for a WNBL return after delivering 33 points and 12 rebounds in the win for Hobart on 9/18 shooting including 3/6 from beyond the arc and 12/12 at the foul line.

Sarah O'Neill added 21 points, three rebounds and three assists for Hobart, and Paige Bradley 19 points, 11 assists and four boards.

Devon Brookshire top-scored for Nunawading with 20 points and five rebounds with Emma Pearce contributing 16 points and four boards, Rachel Brewster 10 points and six rebounds, and Rachel Antoniadou 10 points and five boards.

Tigers fire in second half to give Pioneers third loss

Eight days ago and the Mount Gambier Pioneers hadn’t tasted defeat this season, now all of a sudden they've had three straight losses after the Melbourne Tigers beat them 67-65.

Mount Gambier started the NBL1 South women's season on fire with five straight victories by an average of 22 points, but things have gone awry now starting with a loss to the Ringwood Hawks at home last Saturday night.

Then this Saturday, they started a road double going down to the Geelong United Supercats ahead of taking on the Tigers at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Sunday.

Mount Gambier started the game well enough with 23 points to 18 in the opening quarter and they were still leading 44-39 at half-time.

However, it was the Tigers who took charge in the second half outscoring the Pioneers 28 points to 21 and securing the eventual two-point victory.

The result improves the Tigers to a 3-5 record on the season with the Pioneers now 5-3 after starting 5-0.

Sam Simons was instrumental in the win for Melbourne with 26 points, five rebounds and five assists with 5/11 three-point shooting.

Nikki Metcalfe added 11 points and seven rebounds, Leila Davis nine points, and Lily Carmody eight points, four rebounds and two assists.

Haliegh Reinoehl top-scored for Mount Gambier with 20 points and five rebounds with Isabella Brancatisano adding 16 points, five boards, three assists and two steals, Sherrie Calleia 12 points, eight boards and six assists, and Keryl Ousey eight points and 12 rebounds.

Frankston overpower Ballarat with flying finish

The Frankston Blues made it four wins on the trot on the back of a big finish to overcome the Ballarat Miners 82-75 at home on Sunday.

Frankston was playing its lone game of the weekend and brought a three-game winning streak into the clash with the travelling Miners, and it was Ballarat who looked on track for a second win of the season for much of the contest.

The Miners led by two points at quarter-time, and then with 25 points to 19 in the third term, the visitors were leading 59-58 at three quarter-time.

However, it was all Frankston in the final period with 24 points to 16 to claim the seven-point victory and to improve to a 5-3 record with the Miners still anchored to last place at 1-8 after starting the season with a win against the Melbourne Tigers.

Louise Brown was outstanding once again for Frankston with 27 points and 10 rebounds on 10/17 shooting including 7/9 at the foul line.

Micaela Cocks added 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Blues, Ella Batish 14 points and seven boards, and Chelsea D'Angelo 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

Abbey Wehrung ended up with 23 points, five assists and three rebounds on 3/6 three-point shooting for Ballarat with Tayanna Jones contributing 18 points and seven boards, and Emma Karamovic 17 points and seven boards.

MEN

Hawks get much-needed win against Cavaliers

Ringwood and Casey were both desperate for a win on Sunday at The Rings, and it was the Hawks that got what they were after with the 104-85 victory.

Ringwood came into the game having lost its past three matches while Casey had lost its past two as well, and the two teams came out like there was a lot at stake with an exciting opening quarter.

They combined for 59 points in that term with the Cavs leading 30-29 by quarter-time but the Hawks worked their way on top from there including 27 points to 19 in the second period.

Ringwood made sure of the win with 30 points to 16 in the fourth quarter to end up winning by 19 which sees them improve to 3-5 on the season with the Cavaliers sliding to 2-6.

Jonathan Lawton delivered 23 points, nine assists, five rebounds and five steals for Ringwood including shooting 3/6 from long-range and 8/9 at the free-throw line.

Kyle Daggett added 20 points and three boards, Adrien Sturt 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks, and Matthew Fennell 14 points, five boards and three assists.

Sidy Djitte ended up with 24 points and nine rebounds for Casey on 8/12 shooting while also going 8/11 at the charity stripe.

Mason Perry added 13 points and five rebounds, Malcolm Bernard 12 points and four assists, and Hunter Marks nine points and three boards.

Raiders beat Sabres in battle of in-form teams

The momentum continues to build at the Knox Raiders with an 87-76 victory against the Sandringham Sabres at the State Basketball Centre.

The Raiders came into the game having won their past two games against a Sabres team on a five-match winning streak as well so it was a match up between two in-form teams.

It was a close affair throughout the afternoon and never a double-figure margin until at the finish with the Raiders just gradually building on their lead throughout the contest to end up winning by 11 points.

With the win, Knox improves to a 5-3 record with three consecutive wins while Sandringham's winning run is over with its record 5-4.

The key for the Raiders was the number of strong contributors they had with Madut Akec top-scoring with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Austin Rapp added 19 points and seven rebounds, Deng Acouth 17 points, 10 boards and two blocks, Wayne Stewart Jr 13 points and six rebounds, and Bailey Nunn nine points, seven assists and four rebounds.

CJ Asuncion-Byrd top-scored for Sandringham with 27 points, three rebounds and two steals while knocking down 5/9 from three-point range.

Ben Ayre added 19 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, Campbell Blogg 16 points, two steals and two blocks, and Dane Pineau eight points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Supercats keep winning form going with Hadley leading charge

The Geelong United Supercats scored a third consecutive win beating the Diamond Valley Eagles 93-82 on the road on Sunday.

The Supercats did start the season losing their opening four matches, but coming into Sunday's game they'd won the last two including in dramatic fashion the previous night against the Mount Gambier Pioneers.

Diamond Valley did get a win without DJ Vasiljevic on Saturday night over the Ballarat Miners, but they couldn’t back it up and the Supercats blew them away with 37 points to 18 in the opening period.

Geelong controlled the contest from there and ended up winning by 11 to improve to 3-4 on the season with the Eagles slipping to 4-4.

Gabe Hadley was again outstanding for the Supercats with 25 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals while going 13/13 at the foul line.

George Blagojevic put up 22 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks for Geelong United, Maalo Hicks 18 points, 13 boards and four assists, and DeMarcus Gatlin 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Ngor Manyang continued his standout form for Diamond Valley with another 24 points with Erik Kafritsas adding 20 points and six boards, Jock Perry nine points and two rebounds, and BJ Symons eight points, four boards and two steals.

Glover lifts Eltham to massive win over Rangers

The Eltham Wildcats hit back in emphatic fashion to having lost two of their last three games by beating the Dandenong Rangers 99-76 at home on Sunday.

The Wildcats started the season winning four straight games, but two losses in their past three meant they were highly motivated to bounce back on Sunday against the struggling Rangers.

Eltham delivered quite the statement first three quarters of the contest as well to already be leading 85-50 by three quarter-time. 

The Wildcats did lead by as much as 39 points and while to the Rangers credit they had a better final quarter, Eltham still cruised to the 23-point win to improve to 6-2. Dandenong has now lost six in-a-row at 2-7.

Angus Glover was the star behind the emphatic performance for the Wildcats as the two-time Sydney Kings NBL championship winner put up 34 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Josh Sykes added 14 points, three boards and three assists, Owen Foxwell 10 points, nine assists, six rebounds and three steals, Sam Short nine points and seven assists, and Callum Dalton eight points, four assists and three rebounds.

Mike Amius top-scored in the loss for the Rangers with 22 points and four rebounds with Harry Bowater contributing 15 points and three steals, and Jack Roberts 14 points and five rebounds.

Stith the hero as Waverley return to winner's list

Dillon Stith is still hoping to earn another NBL contract and what better way to press those claims than hitting a game winner for the Waverley Falcons against the North West Tasmania Thunder.

Waverley came into Sunday's game at home desperate for a win following four consecutive losses with the Thunder playing their second game on the road of the weekend after beating the Casey Cavaliers on Saturday.

It was North West Tasmania threatening to open up a big lead in the first half being up by as much as 11 points, but Waverley worked back into the contest and it was all heading towards a thrilling finish.

In the end, in the dying stages Vionte Daniels knocked down a huge three for the Thunder to tie scores up leading into one last possession for the Falcons to either win the game, or take it to overtime.

In the end, it was Dillon Stith knocked down the game winning jumper to break the deadlock and give Waverley the 91-89 victory to improve to 2-5 on the season with North West Tasmania returning home at 3-5.

On top of hitting the game winner, Stith finished with 32 points, 12 rebounds and three assists for Waverley on 10/17 shooting from the floor, 2/3 from downtown and 10/14 at the free-throw line.

Tristan Forsyth also put up 14 points and two rebounds, Dexter Kernich-Drew 13 points and three boards, and Jake Heath 10 points and four assists.

Venky Jois put up 26 points and 10 rebounds on 10/12 shooting for the Thunder with Vionte Daniels contributing 22 points, five assists and four rebounds on perfect 4/4 three-point shooting.

McDaniel fires Chargers to another road win

The Hobart Chargers came from behind to beat the Nunawading Spectres 89-77 with the reigning champions continuing to build momentum this season.

The Chargers might have had a slow start to the season losing three of their first four matches, but the troops have arrived in recent times and their form has grown including a win to start their weekend road trip on Saturday night against the Bendigo Braves.

Hobart backed that up against the Spectres at Nunawading Basketball Centre on Sunday but it was the home team who started well and were leading 69-67 still by three quarter-time.

However, it was all the Chargers in the fourth quarter with 22 points to eight to come from behind and score the 12-point victory.

It's a fourth consecutive win for Hobart who now sit at 5-3 on the season with Nunawading slipping to 5-3 with the defeat.

Last year's Grand Final Sam McDaniel is in some ominous form too ahead of joining the Brisbane Bullets in NBL24. He put up 25 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.

Jarred Bairstow added 20 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, Jacob Richards 12 points, 11 boards and four assists, Zach White 11 points, four rebounds and three assists, and Devin Watson 10 points and three assists.

Will Carius top-scored for Nunawading with 22 points and six rebounds on 4/9 three-point shooting with Josh Tomasi adding 17 points and seven boards, Kingsley Box 12 points and six rebounds, and Jalen Gibbs 10 points, three boards and three assists.

Tigers hand Pioneers second defeat of weekend

The Melbourne Tigers produced their best performance of the season to hand the Mount Gambier Pioneers consecutive losses with the 100-76 victory.

Mount Gambier began their weekend road double undefeated this NBL1 South season, but they return home with two losses to their name after the Tigers were mighty impressive on Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers lost to the Geelong United Supercats on Saturday and were keen to bounce back on Sunday, but the Tigers had other ideas and got off to a flying start with 28 points to 18 in the first quarter.

Then after Melbourne was leading 53-42 by half-time, the Tigers put up 28 points to 14 in the third quarter and that was enough to set up the eventual 24-point victory.

With the win, the Tigers now sit at 4-4 on the season with the Pioneers losing top spot with the two losses this weekend at 6-2.

Mason Gaze put up 26 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Tigers with Jack Purchase contributing 22 points, 11 boards and six assists, Taj Chehhal 20 points, two rebounds and two steals, and Michael Wearne 13 points and three assists.

Nick Marshall top-scored despite the loss for Mount Gambier with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals, Chris Seeley 16 points, four boards and two assists, Will Mayfield 14 points and seven rebounds, and Julian Pesava 13 points.

Barker hits eight threes as Frankston move into top spot

The Frankston Blues are now on top of the NBL1 South on the back of beating the Ballarat Miners at home 106-87 on Sunday.

Frankston did drop a game to the Geelong United Supercats last week ahead of hosting Ballarat at Dreamstreet Lending Arena, and the Blues hit back in emphatic fashion starting with 32 points to 22 in the opening period.

While Ballarat fired back with 26 points to 18 in the second term, the Blues dominated the second half with 56 points to 39 to end up recording the 19-point victory.

The win not only improves Frankston to a 6-2 record but has them in top spot after five rounds with the Miners clinging to eighth position at 5-4.

Lachlan Barker was tremendous in the win for Frankston with 24 points, eight assists and four rebounds while draining 8/15 from three-point range.

Igor Hadziomerovic also had 18 points, four rebounds and three assists, Jordan Evans 18 points and three steals, Lucas Barker 18 points, six rebounds and four assists, Brad Newley 15 points and eight boards, and Daniel Trist 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Nic Pozoglou top-scored for Ballarat with 26 points five rebounds, four steals and three assists with Tyler Rudolph contributing 19 points and 13 boards, and Ned Renfree 16 points.
