New home for Mt Gambier Pioneers!

Mt Gambier is set to host their first home game in their new stadium this weekend, The Wulunda Recreation and Convention Centre.  The $64 million project was undertaken with support of the City of Mt Gambier, the South Australian State and Federal Governments. The centre was needed in the community to update the current stadium, the Ice House which has been the traditional home of the Pioneers for over 34 years.

Mt Gambier is set to host their first home game in their new stadium this weekend, The Wulunda Recreation and Convention Centre.

The $64 million project was undertaken with support of the City of Mt Gambier, the South Australian State and Federal Governments. The facility was needed in the community to update the current stadium, the Ice House, which has been the traditional home of the Pioneers for over 34 years. The new centre now offers the local community a state-of-the art facility to utilise and enjoy, but there is just one more thing missing, the retractable stands- once the stands are installed, it will offer seating capacity of 1500 people to ensure you won't miss a moment of your Pioneers on court!

Wulanda Inside

The facility was named Wulunda after extensive consultation with the local community and wanting to acknowledge the connection the local Boandik Peoples have to the land.

“Council really wanted to honour the cultural significance of the name Wulanda meaning ‘to cherish or enjoy’ and respectfully acknowledge the spiritual connection of our Boandik Peoples to the land and water that Mount Gambier sits upon today,” Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre Committee Presiding Member, Councillor Ben Hood said.

This Friday, April 14, Mt Gambier will be hosting the Casey Cavaliers, which will see a tough battle between the two passionate teams. Both the Mt Gambier, men and women’s teams have started season 2023 strongly, with two wins each, plus playing in front of their home crowd, on their new court, is going to make them hard to beat.

The Pioneer men and women’s team will be hotly contesting the charge to the finals this season as they were both tantalising close in 2022!
