Ballarat Miners (46) lost to Bendigo Braves (88)

The championship defence of the Bendigo Braves started in dominant fashion with Amy Atwell hitting five three-pointers in the 88-46 victory away to the Ballarat Miners.

The two regional Victorian powers opened the NBL1 South season at Selkirk Stadium on Wednesday night. Coming off their undefeated 2023 where they won both the NBL1 South and National Championships, it was a tall order for the Miners hosting the Braves.

It proved just the case too with Bendigo extending their advantage at every change leading by seven points at quarter-time, 18 at the half, 32 at three quarter-time and then ending up winning by 42 points to open the new season in ominous fashion.

Fresh off being a key part of the Perth Lynx's WNBL run to the Grand Final and putting up 30 points in Game 1 of that series against the Southside Flyers, Amy Atwell kept her form going for Bendigo with 25 points, six steals, five blocks, four rebounds and two assists while hitting 5/10 from behind the three-point arc.

Megan McKay was a dominant force last season for the Braves too and started off 2024 right where she left off with 21 points, 13 rebounds and three assists with new signing Ally Wilson producing 12 points, five rebounds and two steals.

Cassidy McLean also scored 14 points to go with four assists while Kasey Burton pulled down 12 rebounds and Kelly Wilson dished out seven assists.

Alex Bunton finished with 14 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks for Ballarat with Jemma Amoore adding seven points and two assists but shooting 27 per cent as a team from the field and getting to the foul line twice the entire game made life tough.

Bendigo heads home to unfurl their championship banner now on Saturday against the Waverley Falcons with the Miners remaining at home on Sunday to the Geelong United Supercats at 12pm local time via NBL1.com.au or the NBL1 App.

The close game of opening night took place at Southern Basketball Stadium with the Knox Raiders holding out the Sandringham Sabres 80-75.

The Raiders started well away from home leading 23-18 by quarter-time but it was a tight affair all evening with Knox's 14-point lead during the third quarter the highest margin throughout.

The Raiders were still leading by 13 points with just under five minutes to go after Rachel Bell knocked down a three ball and scored another jumper.

Sandringham weren’t done, though, and Eilidh Simpson hit a couple of three-pointers and Klara Wischer scored again to make things interesting after she was part of a WNBL championship at the Southside Flyers.

Wischer then landed a three ball with almost 1:30 remaining to make it a four-point ball game, and Britt Smart made the margin three shortly after when she scored for the Sabres.

Bell responded for Knox with a jumper and that proved the dagger blow with the Raiders holding on for the five-point win.
