The Dandenong Rangers made a flying start and maintained that advantage for the eventual 93-84 home win over the Eltham Wildcats on Wednesday night.

The Rangers had split their first two games of the season in Round 1 while the Wildcats lost twice in the opening round so were looking to open their account on Wednesday at Dandenong Basketball Stadium.

Dandenong went on an 8-0 scoring run in the first quarter to go into the quarter-time break leading by 11 points.

Eltham did mount a fight back and went on an 11-0 scoring run themselves, but they couldn't quite ever get back in front throughout the evening.

The Rangers would end up still leading 46-40 by half-time and then opened up a lead as big as 21 points in the fourth quarter before holding firm for the nine-point home victory.

MEN

Dandenong Rangers (75) lost to Eltham Wildcats (85)

Angus Glover produced another standout performance with the newly announced NBL free agent helping the Eltham Wildcats to the 85-75 Wednesday win against the Dandenong Rangers.

The Wildcats split their two games in the opening round of the NBL1 South season while the Rangers won their first two hit outs over Melbourne and Casey to be looking to improve to 3-0 at home on Wednesday.

Precious little separated the two teams through the opening three quarters as well with the biggest lead being the five-point advantage the Wildcats managed to open up in the third quarter.

But at quarter-time it was Eltham narrowly leading 19-18 and half-time scores were all level at 38-38.

By three quarter-time the Wildcats were leading 63-60 but Eltham pulled away in the final period with 22 points to 15 to score the 10-point win and leave both teams now sitting on 2-1 records.

Angus Glover started the NBL1 South season on fire last week hitting his first six three-pointers in the win against the Diamond Valley Eagles.

He was tremendous again on Wednesday with 26 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists on 5/9 three-point shooting.

Sandringham Sabres (81) lost to Casey Cavaliers (87)

Dillon Stith came up huge and the Casey Cavaliers opened their account for 2024 beating the Sandringham Sabres 87-81 despite their addition of two Melbourne United NBL stars.

The Sabres welcomed United pair Shea Ili and Tanner Krebs into the line-up after they took part in the NBL Championship Series that finished only a week and-a-half ago, but the Cavs were on a mission to get that first win at Southern Basketball Stadium.

Sandringham also lost both its games in the opening round and the Sabres did get the better of the start on their home floor to lead 26-20 by quarter-time.

Sandringham were again back up double-digits early in the second quarter, but then Casey managed to work on top and by half-time were leading 41-38.

The lead for the Cavaliers was seven with three minutes to play thanks to a three-point dagger from Dillon Stith, but the Sabres had too much talent and experience to go down lightly.

Some late three-point bombs from David Barlow, Campbell Blogg and Tanner Krebs kept things interesting and had Sandringham back within two points in the dying stages.

However, Casey did enough at the foul line to ice the game and open their account for 2024 with the six-point victory on the road.

Dillon Stith put up a huge performance in the win for the Cavaliers with 31 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks including going 4/10 from beyond the arc.

Preston Bungei added 12 points and 12 rebounds, Anthony Karabatsos 12 points and an assist, Devin Watson 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Jarred Burnett 12 points and five boards.

Tanner Krebs was playing his first game with the Sabres and had 22 points and five rebounds while Shea Ili put up 20 points, six assists and five boards.

Tom Koppens also contributed 14 points and 18 rebounds, and Campbell Blogg 11 points, four boards and two assists.

Sandringham next take on the Kilsyth Cobras away on Saturday at 7:30pm local time via NBL1.com.au or the NBL1 App. The Cavs are at home to the Bendigo Braves on Sunday.
