Waverley Falcons (93) lost to Melbourne Tigers (94)
It's never dull when the Melbourne Tigers win and it was a tip back from Callum Barker that delivered their first victory of the season over the Waverley Falcons.
It was the most dramatic of finishes with a tip-in up the other end from Bennie Lewis giving Waverley the one-point lead at Waverley Basketball Centre.
Tigers coach Andrew Gaze called for time and drew up a play for his son Mason to get a look at the game winner on the back of being in some hot shooting form including a huge three to put Melbourne in front just seconds earlier.
Gaze's mid-range jumper wasn’t far away, but it did rim out only for Callum Barker to get his hand on the offensive rebound, tap the ball back in and it bounced in just as the time expired.
That gave the Tigers the 94-93 lead and after a nervous wait while the video was reviewed to make sure it left Barker's fingers before time expired, the Tigers were able to celebrate the most dramatic of wins to open their account after four losses to open the season.
Mason Gaze came up huge all evening for Melbourne finishing with 26 points, four rebounds and four assists on 11/16 shooting from the field and 4/6 from three-point territory.
Jack Purchase also produced 20 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Tigers, Taj Chehhal 12 points, three assists and two boards, Callum Barker 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, and Tom Wilson 10 points, eight boards and eight assists.
DJ Vasiljevic put up 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in the loss for Waverley with Malik Meunier contributing 16 points and five assists, Bennie Lewis 14 points, nine boards and five assists, Fraser Roxburgh 11 points and three rebounds, and Mason Forbes 10 points.
