Kilsyth Cobras (68) lost to Ballarat Miners (80)

The Ballarat Miners have shot to the top of the NBL1 South standings to close Round 6 following the 80-68 road victory on Sunday against the Kilsyth Cobras.

The Cobras were back home at Kilsyth Sports Centre hunting a third straight victory to keep their momentum going up against a Miners team also coming to town on a three-game winning run.

That set up a fascinating match up between in-form teams and it was the Miners keeping their momentum rolling from beating the Eltham Wildcats the previous night to open up an eight-point lead during the first quarter.

Ballarat would still be leading 22-16 by quarter-time with their advantage 42-35 at the half-time break while they were still leading 59-54 by three quarter-time.

Kilsyth wasn’t giving up the ghost, though, and a three-point play early in the last term from Ben Ursich put the home team in front and they had all the momentum.

Ned Renfree responded with a three-pointer to restore Ballarat to the lead but Corey Jeffs responded with a triple for Kilsyth to put his team back in front and set up a big final seven minutes.

However, it was all Ballarat from that point with a triple from Tyler Rudolph putting the Miners back in front and they would outscore the Cobras 16 points to three the rest of the game to score the 12-point victory.

The Hawks were back home at The Rings looking to bounce back from the loss the previous night to the Diamond Valley Eagles while Geelong arrived also trying to rebound from losing their past four matches.

Ringwood started well to open up a 10-point advantage during the second quarter and to still be on top 45-35 going into the half-time break.

The Hawks maintained the lead through most of the second half as well but United kept on coming and grabbed the lead with just under four minutes to play thanks to George Blagojevic.

He then knocked down a three-pointer to push Geelong United out to a five-point edge before Tom Carroll responded with a three-pointer for Ringwood.

That was just the start of the massive shot making with Carroll hitting another with 1:45 to play to level scores up before hitting his third in a matter of minutes to restore Ringwood to the three-point advantage.

That's when it was time for Latrell Jones to take control with two three-pointers in the last 30 seconds of the contest to secure the thrilling three-point victory for Geelong.

The win improves United to a 3-6 record on the season and snaps a four-game losing run with Jones not only knocking down those massive late threes, but finishing with 20 points on 4/6 shooting from long-range.

Both teams had their time on top in the first half with Knox leading by four points at quarter-time and then clinging to a one-point advantage at 44-43 at the half-time break.

The Wildcats then started the second half well but the Raiders hit back to score 14 points in-a-row to grab a double-figure lead, and to still be on top seven with just over a minute to play when Malith Machar knocked down a massive corner three.

The Wildcats hadn’t given up, though, and Angus Glover cut the margin back to four with a three-point bomb before he added a couple of free-throws, and then Ralph Bissainthe blocked KJ Feagin up one end, and threw down the dunk up the other level up scores.

That's where scores would stay as well by the end of regulation at 82-82 and both teams were down a big body going into overtime with Kyle Bowen fouled out for Knox and Josh Sykes off injured for Eltham.

Then in extra time, it was all Eltham including Glover knocking down a long, long three from the logo and the Wildcats would end up outscoring Knox 13 to four in those last five minutes to secure the nine-point victory.

The win stops the three-game losing slide for Eltham to improve them to 5-4 on the season with Glover back in the line-up and delivering 24 points, five rebounds and two assists.
