The Nunawading Spectres (Melbourne East Basketball Association) and Ringwood Hawks (Ringwood Basketball Association) have announced the inauguration of the GEBC Cup.

Designed as an annual event, the GEBC Cup will be hotly contested between the two clubs, with the victor determined by the majority of games won out of the 4 regular season matchups. In the case of a tie in games won, percentage will be used to declare the winner.

The GEBC Cup symbolizes the strong partnership between Nunawading and Ringwood. Although both associations operate independently during the week, they unite to present the Greater Eastern Basketball Conference (GEBC) on Saturdays, where over 5,000 junior athletes revel in the joy of weekly basketball competition.

“The GEBC embodies our shared commitment to fostering basketball talent and community engagement,” said MEBA President Paul Flynn. “The GEBC Cup serves as a platform to celebrate our collaboration and the dedication of our member clubs.”

Echoing Flynn’s sentiments, General Manager of Ringwood Basketball Ken Harrington expressed his enthusiasm for the launch of the GEBC Cup , stating, “This is a great chance to bring elite basketball to as many GEBC families as we can. After all, most NBL and NBL1 players basketball journey started in a domestic league like the GEBC.”

The first GEBC Cup games will be held on Friday, April 5th 2024, as the Nunawading Spectres host the Ringwood Hawks in their NBL1 South home opener at Nunawading Stadium. The women’s match will tip off at 6:00 pm, followed by the men’s game at 8:00 pm.
