This year the Geelong United Supercats have taken a significant step towards inclusivity and community representation with their Indigenous singlet design, created by artist David Flagg of the Wemba Wemba People. This unique uniform, originally designed by Flagg, has become a permanent feature for the club's NBL1 South, Big V, and Victorian Junior Basketball League teams throughout the year.
Simon Flagg, CEO of the Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative and a member of the Wemba Wemba People, expressed his appreciation for the club's commitment to unity and representation. He highlighted the significance of the uniform being worn by all teams, from the NBL1 squad to the under twelves, emphasizing the year-round connection with the community.
David Flagg, the talented artist behind the design, discussed the importance of reconnecting Indigenous youth to their heritage and culture through his artwork. The singlet goes beyond being mere generic art; it tells a powerful story of the players' connection to their community and serves as a catalyst for driving positive change.
By adopting this Indigenous singlet as a permanent part of their uniform, Geelong United Supercats have demonstrated their dedication to honoring and embracing the First Nations peoples of Australia. The design not only showcases cultural pride but also raises awareness and fosters a deeper understanding of the Indigenous community's rich heritage.
The inclusion of the Indigenous singlet throughout the club's various teams underscores the significance of unity and representation at all levels of the organization. Geelong United Supercats' commitment to wearing the Indigenous singlet year-round serves as a symbol of respect, reconciliation, and their ongoing support for Indigenous communities.
