Ballarat Miners’ Abbey Wehrung has kicked off her season strongly and will carry that momentum when she fronts her former squad tonight.

Wehrung made the move from the Bendigo Braves to the Miners in the offseason, returning to her hometown for the NBL1 South’s 2023 season.

NBL1 South expert Liam Ellison said the Bendigo Spirit WNBL player has slot into her new team with ease, leading her side to a 79-54 win over the Melbourne Tigers in their first game.

“She had a ripping stat line, 30 points, seven boards and seven dimes. Five steals as well in a dominant victory over Melbourne,” Ellison said on the first episode of this season’s The NBL1 Show with host Megan Hustwaite.

“I would be keeping an eye on the Ballarat Miners this year because I think Abbey Wehrung is going to have a huge season.”

Wehrung top-scored on Saturday night against the Tigers, proving to her new squad that she is here to make a vast impact.

Returning to her hometown, the 27-year-old’s impressive stat line in her first match showcased she could be the ingredient the Miners need to reach a top spot this season.

“She’s always a star at this level of NBL1,” Ellison said.

“Coming across from the Braves in the offseason of course. This WNBL season (she) led the league in 3-point percentage of 20 attempts or more, shot 52 per cent from long range. So she’s coming in with some serious form in the national leagues.”

A must-watch game and NBL1 South’s Game of the Week is tonight, where Wehrung will face her former team, the Braves, in a Thursday night thriller.
