Castec Rural Pioneers Secure NZ Talent Scott Telfer for 2026 Season

The Mount Gambier Pioneers are excited to announce the signing of New Zealand guard Scott Telfer, who has committed to the Castec Rural Pioneers for the 2026 NBL1 South season.

Telfer arrives in Mount Gambier following six seasons in the New Zealand NBL, bringing with him valuable experience and a reputation for being a disciplined, team-first guard. Across his 100-plus game career in New Zealand, Scott has shown the ability to contribute reliably at both ends of the floor.

His 2023 season with the Taranaki Airs stands out, where he averaged 5.7 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists, shooting an impressive 48% from the field, signalling his efficiency and strong decision-making.

He has consistently provided steady guard play throughout his career, highlighted by multiple seasons where he delivered between 4–6 points per game, defended at a high level, and fit seamlessly into structured offensive systems.

With his defensive poise, efficient scoring, and mature approach to the game, Scott is set to bring toughness and stability to the Pioneers’ backcourt in 2026.

Head Coach Pete Godfrey shared his thoughts on adding Scott to the Pioneers program.

“Scott’s CV was sent to me by one of Australia’s most highly credentialled coaches, someone with deep experience in New Zealand — a voice well worth listening to. Scott arrives from the NZ NBL with a strong reputation as a versatile wing and a genuine lockdown defender with a high basketball IQ.”

“While his numbers don’t always tell the full story, his impact on games, teammates, and winning is undeniable. Through our due diligence, we studied the elite rosters he has been part of in New Zealand, and it became clear that his style of play will translate extremely well to the NBL1 South competition.” he added.

Scott expressed his excitement about joining Mount Gambier and competing in the NBL1 South.

“I am really excited to be joining Mt Gambier and playing in the NBL1 South, I have heard a lot of good things about the Pioneers and Coach Pete, so am looking forward to the season starting. All I want to do is win, and contribute however I can on both ends of the court to make sure that happens.”

The Castec Rural Pioneers will tip off their 2026 NBL1 South campaign soon, with further announcements on roster signings and pre-season activities to be released soon.
