The Sandringham Sabres have appointed Cheryl Chambers as head coach of their NBL1 South Women’s team for the 2026 season, adding one of Australian basketball’s most accomplished figures to the program.

Chambers is currently an assistant coach with the Australian Opals, a role she has held across multiple Olympic and World Cup campaigns. She also boasts more than two decades of head coaching experience in the WNBL, including guiding the Southside Flyers from 2019 to 2024 and previously leading the Sydney Uni Flames.

Her coaching résumé includes three WNBL championships (2017, 2020, 2024) and three WNBL Coach of the Year awards (2005, 2009, 2017).

As a player, Chambers spent 13 years in the WNBL from 1984 to 1997 with Melbourne East, Coburg, Bulleen and Melbourne Tigers. A guard, she was part of the 1984 WNBL championship team and later transitioned into coaching with the Bulleen Boomers in 2001, beginning a career that has since seen her at the forefront of Australian women’s basketball.

A statement on the Sabres’ website said the club “couldn’t be more excited to have Cheryl lead our Women’s team into 2026 and beyond.”
