Joe Chilcott suits up for JackJumpers in NBL game against United
Burnie's Joe Chilcott has always longed to suit up for the Tasmania JackJumpers, and his dream became a reality during an NBL practice match on Monday, August 28.
The JackJumpers defeated Melbourne United 79-63 in front of a sold out crowd at Ulverstone Sports and Leisure Centre. Despite getting limited time on the court, the 27-year-old enjoyed the experience of being involved with the JackJumpers for a professional game. "It was an unbelievable experience just to get on the floor and be around the guys," Chillcott said. "They needed a guy to step up and help them out while they were up north and it was great to be in a position to do that. I grew up playing against Jack McVeigh so it was fun to play with him. Milton Doyle is unreal, it's great to see how he dominates on the floor and he's a great guy too."
Chilcott, who has previously trained with the JackJumpers over the past two seasons, was thrilled when called upon by coach Scott Roth. "Scott said to me after practice on Saturday that I'm going to suit up. He pulled me aside while I was leaving, which was a pretty cool moment," he said. "The staff are fantastic, whether it was [Monday] or at training they are always chatting to me, that's what makes the culture and the team so great."
While Chilcott would not turn down an opportunity to play for the JackJumpers full-time, he has no exceptions moving forward. "I think any Tasmanian basketballers' dream is to play for the JackJumpers but for me it was a great experience and I think that's all I take from it," he said. "There were definitely no expectations set, for Scott to put me on was a great opportunity."
Chilcott averaged 17 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers in the NWBU this season, as well as playing 20 games for the North West Thunder in the NBL1 South season.
The JackJumpers will return to the court on Wednesday, August 30, when they play United at Eplhin Sports Centre.
