Men’s captain Jerome Ried signs on for ninth year with the Northern Star Resources Goldfields Giants men's team ahead of the 2023 NBL1 West season.
Since moving up from Esperance to join the Giants as an 18-year-old, Reid reached his official 150 game milestone early last season.
The 195cm guard, who took up captaincy in 2020, is looking forward to another season of leadership under new head coach Scott Manton.
“Preseason is good – Scotty's been good, it's different having a new coach, but he has been giving us a lot of freedom. It lets us make and fix our own mistakes - it's working really well for us,” he said.
In last year’s season, Reid averaged 5.5ppg, 1.6apg and 2.7rpg.
One of the league's most prolific three-point shooters, he will once again be a focal point on the Giants, providing veteran leadership at just 26 years of age and is always keen to help out some of the younger squad members.
Manton said Reid’s impact on the squad both on and off court is immense.
“He is heading into his fourth year as captain and continues to evolve as a leader and I'm looking forward to the year ahead with Rome leading our group,” he said.
The player said being in the role for a number of years now, he is more comfortable with leadership.
“I'm trying to do what I can to develop the younger guys on and off the court,” he said.
“We've got a lot of keen players, younger guys – we haven't seen that in ages, so it's really good to see them come down to training, be keen as and have a crack.”
Reid is looking forward to the new recruits joining in preseason training soon.
“I think they will be really good - I think we've recruited really well this year,” he said.
“We will be big, which is great and so far we're very unselfish, we're moving the ball really well and it’s looking really good at the moment.
“It would be great to go back to the playoffs, finish top four and be a real contender – not a pretender.
"And we definitely just want to develop locals and just be more prepared for the future."
Reid is working hard in preseason training as we zero in on the first game of NBL1 West 2023.
