The table is starting to sort itself with the Wilson-less Flames getting a fast start, Fejo flexes Bearcats muscle again, new import De La Cerda asserts herself on the league, M & M’s skittle Warriors and Johnson jades the Rockets. Here’s the Round 9 wrap of the Womens NBL1 Central 2022…

Norwood Flames vs Central District Lions

Wilson-less Flames fast start secures win

A 32-10 opening quarter set the tone for the Wilson-less Flames as they fired away from the Lions 85-53 at the Firedome. In the absence of Wilson her partner in crime Brooke Basham stepped up with 25 points and along with Molly Coleman (14 points and 16 rebounds) and Anderson (14 points) provided too much potency at the offensive end. Alek Akeun was extremely efficient with 15 points and 9 rebounds in 16 minutes of play. The Lions were paced by Raynisha Washington with 18 points and Casey Samuels with 15 points.  

West Adelaide Bearcats vs Forestville Eagles

Fejo flexes Bearcats muscle to takedown Eagles

It was a quick few minutes towards the end of the second quarter that saw the Bearcats flex their muscles, then some dire defence to take down the Eagles 81-67 at the Bearcat Cave. 9 of Jasmin Fejo 15 points (along with 8 assists and 7 rebounds) came with three consecutive triples to open the game right up before the Bearcat defence locked down the Eagles for an 19-8 quarter. Abby Brenton (16 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds) and Jennie Rintala (13 points and 9 rebounds) paced their team missing Skye Langenbrinck and head coach Kay-Lee Stuart (Sapphires) with Vicki Daldy stepping in. The Eagles struggled for contributors with Sam Simons playing all minutes and clocking 21 points and 5 rebounds with both Simons combining for 34 of their 67 points for the night.  

Eastern Mavericks vs Southern Tigers

De La asserts herself to help Tigers claw Mavs  

Import Jaedyn De La Cerda was unstoppable as she helped the Tigers claw off the Mavs 54-84 at the Shooting Gallery. She dropped 27 points along with 7 assists in the absence of star guard Morgan Yaeger. Demi Skinner was solid as well with 17 points and 7 rebounds while Mollie McKendrick against the side she played for one season last year notched 12 points and 9 rebounds. The Mavs lost touch after a fast start giving up 28-55 across the middle quarters on the back of the Tigers 16 points from turnovers and 6 second chance points. Lefebvre-Okankwu led the way for the home side with 17 points while Stephanie Formby stepped up for her absent team-mate Olivia Bradley (Sapphires) with a career high 12 points and 17 rebounds.  

Sturt Sabres vs Woodville Warriors

M & M’s run separates Sabres from wrestling Warriors  

It was the M and M’s that got it done for the Sabres as they opened up an unassailable lead 84-61. Mikayla Williams (6 points), Nicola Mathews (2-2 triples) and Lana Mudronja engineered a 15-0 run which took a tight start away from the Warriors and gave the advantage to the homeside. The Warriors did close it back to 12 points in the fourth quarter thanks mainly to Emily Winter (15 points and 7 rebounds) and a career high double from college returnee Eliza Joynes (15 points and 10 rebounds), but the Sabres quickly closed it out through their shooters. Williams ended up with another double double of 17 points and 11 rebounds after early foul trouble and Mathews with 13 points and 5 rebounds in the absence of her sister and captain Kayla.     

North Adelaide Rockets vs South Adelaide Panthers

Johnson jades Rockets to maintain Panthers in pole position

A season high from Jade Johnson destroyed the Rockets in the second half 59-89 at the Lights. Jade sparkled for 28 points and 6 assists in the absence of Olivia Levicki as they held the Rockets to 2-23 in the third quarter. Ash “Splash” Spencer dropped 17 points and with import Izzy Osk Sigurdardottir also contributing 12 points and 8 rebounds in extended minutes. The Rockets got punch off the pine through Lily Zbierski with a career high 17 points and young gun Grace Facchini with 11 points. Plenty of the other Rockets scorers were well held by the Panthers defence marshalled by Jordan Hunter.
