Meteorettes open account for 2023 at expense of reigning champs

On the back of a near quadruple double from Davida Dale and huge performance from Denesha Bobongie, the Mackay Meteorettes won their first game of the NBL1 North season over the Townsville Flames 90-69.

With both teams coming off an opening round loss, it was Mackay on their home court who worked their way on top against a Flames team that might be the defending champions, but are a vastly different unit in terms of personnel to start this season.

The Meteorettes were never really headed after opening up a double-digit first half lead and going into half-time leading 46-28. Another 27 points to 17 in the third quarter and Mackay cruised to the 21-point victory.

Dale had a massive game for Mackay finishing with 18 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals. She was tantalisingly close to a triple-double and not that far from a quadruple double.

Bobongie was terrific as well with 26 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks on 12/18 shooting with Phoebe Holmes contributing 14 points.

Kate Gaze top-scored for Townsville with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists with Indi Bowyer contributing 15 points, five boards and three steals, Majella Carey 12 points and five rebounds, and Grace Rodgers eight points and boards.

The Mackay Meteors proved too strong on their home floor for the Townsville Heat on Friday night going on to score the 82-64 victory.

White had 15 points already by quarter-time and went into half-time with 21 to his name with the Meteors leading 52-33. Townsville did make a charge during the third quarter and even got back within five points on the back of a Marcelius Garrick three-pointer.

However, Mackey responded and led by eight still by three quarter-time before pulling away again in the fourth period to win by 18 on their home floor.

White finished the night with another 34 points, eight steals, five rebounds and five assists for Mackay on the back of shooting 12/24 from the field, 4/10 from downtown and 6/7 from the free-throw line.
