NBL1 North Recap | Friday Men's Round 12

There were three NBL1 North Men's matches on Friday night and just some of the standout performers were Henry Pwono, Isaac White, Ben Ayre, Lat Mayen, Jayden Hodgson, Jarvis Summers, Matthew McCarthy and Anthony Drmic.

The winners on Friday night to open Round 12 in the NBL1 North were the Ipswich Force, Cairns Marlins and Rockhampton Rockets.

The Ipswich Force welcomed Matt Hodgson into their line-up for the first time in 2022 and their star studded squad proved too good for the Logan Thunder, winning 98-76.

Henry Pwono delivered 32 points, Isaac White 28 and Majok Deng 23 in the win for Ipswich. Jeremy Kendle finished with 15 points and 10 assists for Logan.

The Cairns Marlins then proved too strong for the Red City Roar at home as well on Friday night to end up prevailing 109-81.

Ben Ayre finished with 30 points on eight threes for Cairns as he eagerly awaits to lock away an NBL deal with Lat Mayen delivering 26 points. Jayden Hodgson put up 27 points for Red City.

The Rockhampton Rockets then came from behind to produce a massive last quarter to overrun the Northside Wizards and win 102-95.

Jarvis Summers delivered 29 points and 14 assists for Rockhampton with Matthew McCarthy adding 29 points and 20 rebounds. Anthony Drmic put up 34 points for the Wizards to go with six assists.

Round 12 in the NBL1 North continues on Saturday night with the South West Metro Pirates taking on the Brisbane Capitals, the Mackay Meteors at home to the Northside Wizards and the Sunshine Coast Phoenix hosting the Southern Districts Spartans.

The Townsville Heat are also at home to the Red City Roar while the Darwin Salties host the Gold Coast Rollers and the North Gold Coast Seahawks take on USC Rip City.

Then on Sunday, the North Gold Coast Seahawks host the Logan Thunder and the Southern Districts Spartans face the South West Metro Pirates.

LOGAN THUNDER 76 lost to IPSWICH FORCE 98

The Ipswich Force took quite the talented squad with them to take on the Logan Thunder on Friday night and they came away with the 22-point road victory.

Ipswich welcomed 196-game NBL centre Matt Hodgson into their line-up in Round 12 of the NBL1 North as he joined a team featuring Cairns Taipans star Majok Deng, Illawarra Hawks guard Isaac White, the supremely talented Henry Pwono and with good depth beneath them.

The Force started strongly on the road at Bendigo Bank Cornubia Park Sports Centre to open up a double-digit lead and to still be up 19-11 at quarter-time.

Another 8-0 run in the second quarter from Ipswich saw the lead grow to 15 points and they were still in control at 46-33 by half-time.

Logan didn’t give up the fight, though, and you wouldn’t expect any different with a team led by Jeremy Kendle. The Thunder were able to pull the deficit back to 10 by three quarter-time.

However, Ipswich was able to pull away once more in the fourth quarter with 30 points to 18 to end up winning 98-76 after a 14-0 run down the stretch.

Henry Pwono produced a show-stealing performance for Ipswich ending the night with 32 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals on 13/20 shooting.

Isaac White also put up 28 points, six rebounds and five assists, Majok Deng 23 points, eight boards and three assists, and Matt Hodgson in his first appearance four points and 11 rebounds.

Jeremy Kendle finished with 15 points and 10 assists for Logan with Rasmus Bach contributing 13 points and four rebounds, Boston Mazlin 13 points and five boards, Mitch Young 12 points and eight rebounds, and Michael Cedar nine points and five boards.

 

CAIRNS MARLINS 109 defeated RED CITY ROAR 81

With Ben Ayre and Lat Mayen combining for 56 points, the Cairns Marlins proved too much for the Red City Roar at home on Friday night to end up winning by 28 points.

Cairns hosted Red City on Friday night at Early Settler Stadium without head coach Kerry Williams who is with the Australian Boomers at the FIBA Asia Cup.

The Marlins ended up going on a 13-0 run in the first quarter to end up leading 28-19 by quarter-time. 

It was another streak of 14 points in the second term for Cairns as the lead grew to 26 points and the home team was leading 52-32 by the half-time break.

Cairns scored another 30 points to 21 in the third quarter as the lead was out to 30 points. It grew to 34 in the fourth quarter before the Marlins ended up winning 109-81.

The victory improves Cairns to a 9-5 record on the season while Red City slips to 4-10 following the defeat.

The major difference was the three-point shooting performance from the Marlins as they knocked down 23/49 as a team at 46.9 per cent while Red City went 6/25 at 24.0 per cent.

Ben Ayre produced a stunning shooting display for Cairns hitting 8/13 from the land of plenty on his way to 30 points, three rebounds and two assists for the game.

Cairns Taipans NBL signing Lat Mayen continued his impressive form too with 26 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals while hitting 5/7 from downtown.

Curt Ah Wang added 12 points, four rebounds and two assists for the Marlins, Kody Stattmann 10 points and nine boards, and Deba George 10 points, four assists and three rebounds.

Jayden Hodgson battled hard for Red City to finish with 27 points and seven rebounds with Spencer Parker contributing 16 points and 11 boards, Nelson Larkins 12 points, five assists and four boards, and Gareth Lyle eight points.

 

ROCKHAMPTON ROCKETS 102 defeated NORTHSIDE WIZARDS 95

The thriller of the night took place in Rockhampton and the Rockets finished full of running to deliver a massive last quarter to beat the Northside Wizards by seven points.

The Rockets were at home to the Wizards at Bravus Arena on Friday night to open Round 12 in the NBL1 North and even though Northside was without Mitch McCarron due to Boomers duties at the Asia Cup, they still arrived with a team featuring Anthony Drmic, Kevin White, Lual Diing and company.

The Wizards opened up an eight-point edge during the first quarter and were still leading 24-21 by quarter-time.

Northside then really pulled away in the second period by piling on 11 straight points at one stage to lead by as much as 17 and to be in control at half-time with the 54-37 advantage.

Rockhampton began to work back into the contest during the third quarter with 27 points to 19, but still by three quarter-time it was the Wizards leading 73-64.

The Rockets needed to dig deep in the last quarter if they were to overcome the Wizards and they produced some scintillating basketball with 38 points to 22 including a 15-0 run at one point to end up winning 102-95.

The victory improves the Rockets to a 7-8 record on the season while with the loss the Wizards slip to 7-6.

Jarvis Summers delivered 29 points, 14 assists, five rebounds and two steals for Rockhampton including going 10/14 at the foul line.

Matthew McCarthy also produced 29 points, 20 rebounds and three assists on 10/18 shooting overall, 3/6 from three-point land and 6/7 at the charity stripe.

Damian Prgomet added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Rockets and Kendall Stephens 14 points and 4/11 from deep including the clincher in the dying stages.

Anthony Drmic produced 34 points, six assists and three rebounds for the Wizards while Atem Atem added 14 points and two steals, Kevin White 14 points, eight assists and five rebounds, Deshawn Ross-Paiwan 13 points, three boards and three assists, and Lual Diing 11 points, 14 rebounds and four assists.
