ROUND 4 – FRIDAY NIGHT
GEELONG SUPERCATS 77 defeated KNOX RAIDERS 71
The Geelong Supercats continued their strong start to the 2022 NBL1 South season with a six-point win at home to the Knox Raiders on Friday night.
The Supercats hosted the Raiders at The Arena on Friday night and it was a tight contest the entire way.
The Raiders started strongly away from home and led 17-12 by the end of the first quarter but the Supercats were able to turn the tide and end up leading 32-28 going into the half-time break.
Knox were far from done yet and put up 24 points to 19 in the third quarter which saw them open up a nine-point advantage following a Rachel Quirk layup with two minutes remaining before three quarter-time.
The Supercats responded, though, to only trail by a point heading into the fourth quarter and then grabbing the lead on a Taylah Simmons offensive rebound and putback.
However, it was still a tight contest until Aimie Rocci drained a three ball for Geelong with five minutes to go. Sara Blicavs then scored a layup, Sarah O'Neill scored five consecutive points and a Blicavs make from beyond the arc sealed the eventual 77-71 win for the Supercats.
Geelong ended up raking in 54 rebounds to 40 from Knox for the night including 23 boards at the offensive end to 10 to help them take eight extra field goals for the game and to get to the foul line for 11 more shots.
Sara Blicavs might not have had the best start to the game but she soon warmed to the task and despite shooting 6/24 for the game, she was instrumental in the victory with 19 points, 17 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Sarah O'Neill also finished with 16 points and nine rebounds for Geelong with Aimie Rocci contributing 13 points and five assists, Antoniette Emma-Nnopu nine points, and Jessica Scannell eight points, four assists and three rebounds.
Alicia Froling finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for Knox with Klara Wischer contributing 14 points and eight boards, Eliza West 12 points and five rebounds, and Kara Tessari 11 points and five assists.
