NBL1 South recap: Round 1- Thursday April 21

The Ringwood Hawks and Kilsyth Cobras tipped off the 2022 Coles Express NBL1 South season at a packed Norwood Secondary College.

The Ringwood Hawks and Kilsyth Cobras tipped off the 2022 Coles Express NBL1 South season at a packed Norwood Secondary College.

Much to their pleasure, the home side did the double, taking home wins from both the men’s and women’s games.

WOMEN

Ringwood Hawks (57) def Kilsyth Cobras (48)

The Ringwood Hawks got their campaign off to a perfect start, literally, by holding the Kilsyth Cobras to single figures while piling on 25 points on their own in the first period alone.

Marena Whittle was the star of the show and picked up where she left off last season with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

For Kilsyth, Lauren Scherf was held relatively at bay with 11 points which gave Abi Curtin the chance to shine off the bench with a team-high 16 points.

MEN

This was a tight tussle throughout with no more than five points splitting the teams at the end of each period.

While Ringwood veteran Matthew Fennell led all scorers with 22, it was 18-year-old Harry Sealey who caught everyone’s attention, putting up 17 points in 17 minutes in his NBL1 debut.

Corey Jeffs was the shining light for Kilsyth with 18 points and 10 boards.
