NBL1 South Recap: Round 9 - Saturday

With seven games across the NBL1 South this Saturday let’s see how all the action from the women’s division panned out below:
Geelong Supercats (73) def by Launceston Tornadoes (77)
The Tornadoes have pulled off a magnificent win on the road, with only seven players suiting up while they wait for Opal marianna Tolo to join the team this weekend.
Launceston took down the team they are tied with for third on the ladder off the back of Kelsey Griffin’s 33 points (6/10 from three) and 16 rebounds, playing all forty minutes.
Keely Froling added 17 points and 14 rebounds while Opals teammate and Supercat Sara Blicavs only scored 16 points shooting 5/18 (27%) from the field.
Sandringham Sabres (80) def by Waverley Falcons (89)
Despite Brittnay Smart’s 40 points, Sandringham could not beat Waverley on their home court.
Waverley’s Carley Ernst and Renae Mokrzycki both had 16 points each while Orla O’Reilly had 25 points and six steals.
Waverley stole the win in the fourth quarter where they scored 33 to the Sabres’ 22. Funda Nakkasoglu struggled mightily for Sandringham, shooting 3/15 from the field with only nine points.
Ringwood Hawks (54) def by Ballarat Miners (57)
Young gun Jade Melbourne got the Miners a win on the road with scoring a third of her teams’ points, 23 points and 11 rebounds got her team the win. Opals teammate Zitina Aokuso scored 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Ringwood put up a good fight, with Marena Whittle scoring 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Of Ringwood’s eight active players only four scored, as Latvian Digna Strautmane had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Kilsyth Cobras (71) def Melbourne Tigers (59)
Kilsyth have taken down the Tigers at home with Opal Lauren Schref providing the hits with 15 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and five steals. Carly Turner also had 15 points with nine rebounds, while the Tigers struggled to manage the Cobras in the fourth term, scoring 12 to Kilsyth’s 21 points.
Tess Heal had some highlight passes, finishing with six assists and 20 points in the game.
Eltham Wildcats (72) def by Bendigo Braves (96)
On top of the ladder, the Bendigo Braves have taken care of business of the road against the Wildcats.
WNBL MVP Anneli Maley put on a show with 23 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists in the loss. The Braves won with a team effort, with four players scoring over 16 points and Megan McKay again being the star with 21 points and seven rebounds.
Dandenong Rangers (42) def by Knox Raiders (80)
Knox smashed the Rangers at home by 38 points, with the Raiders’ Alicia Froling scoring 23 points with 11 rebounds to take the decisive win.
Tenaya Sooalo was Dandenong’s best scorer with 14 points as the team struggled to put the ball into the hoop, shooting 27 percent from the field in the game. With this win Knox are sneaking up the ladder into the top of the South as contenders.
Mount Gambier Pioneers (56) def Hobart Chargers (47)
The Pioneers have continued their hot streak by taking down the Chargers. Sydney Flames development player Sherrie Calleia scored 15 points which helped Mt Gambier take the win. Consistent as ever, Cassandra Brown had 14 points with 13 rebounds in the win.
Hobart’s Angela Tompkins scored 22 points with 12 rebounds but it wasn’t enough to take down the tied for first on the ladder Pioneers.
