Launceston Tornadoes 100 def Hobart Chargers 52
The Launceston Tornadoes have emphatically beaten the Hobart Chargers in the lone game of the NBL1 women’s competition this week.
The Chargers led for the opening few minutes of the game, bringing into question whether the visitors could pull off the upset against one of the league's top sides, playing without arguably the best player in the league, Keely Froling.
However, once Launceston took the lead around the five-minute mark of the first quarter, the Tornadoes refused to let it go.
The home side finished the quarter on a 20-5 run, opening up a 13-point lead going into the first break.
The Chargers kept within reach of Launceston in the second term, thanks in part to a strong showing from Ellie Collins.
Collins was aggressive in looking for her shot, finishing with 18 points, however struggled to find her touch from behind the arc, connecting on only two of her eight attempts.
Holding onto a 16-point lead heading into the second half, the Tornadoes decided to remove all question of the outcome in the final two quarters, outsourcing Hobart 58-26.
Without Froling, Kelsey Griffin and Mariah Payne stepped up, outsourcing the Chargers on their own by combining for 57 points.
To complement her 28 points, Griffin pulled down 17 rebounds and tallied five assists, while Payne flirted with a triple double (29 points, nine rebounds, seven assists).
The win is Launceston’s eighth of the year and sees the said trail only an undefeated Frankston side on the competition ladder.
