ROUND 4 – FRIDAY NIGHT
JOONDALUP WOLVES 77 lost to WARWICK SENATORS 110
Two form teams locked horns in the lone game of Friday night in the NBL1 West competition and it was the Warwick Senators who ran out big winners over the Joondalup Wolves.
Both teams have started their NBL1 West seasons impressively with the Wolves under new coach David Morrell and plenty of fresh faces scoring wins against the Willetton Tigers, Kalamunda Eastern Suns and Perry Lakes Hawks.
The Senators might have lost first up in a tight one to the defending champion Hawks, but have since beaten the Perth Redbacks and Eastern Suns even without new coach Luke Brennan being there due to his Perth Wildcats NBL commitments.
However, Brennan was on hand to take charge for the first time on Friday night and it was only fitting it was up against the Wolves at his old home where he was such a significant part of their success for a long time as the right hand man to Ben Ettridge.
While Brennan was there, captain Cody Ellis wasn’t for the Senators due to the wedding in NSW of former NBL teammate Kevin White along with checking out the semi-final between his former NBL teams the Illawarra Hawks and Sydney Kings.
However, right from the outset the Senators were on a mission to send a real message to their local rivals and put up 28 points to 17 in the opening quarter.
It was another 29 points to 18 in the second period and they went into half-time leading 57-35.
They extended their advantage to 26 points by three quarter-time and kept it going with another 26 points to 19 in the fourth quarter to claim the mighty impressive 110-77 victory.
It was a remarkably efficient shooting display from the Senators going at 45/78 from the floor at 57.7 per cent while they restricted the Wolves to 30/72 at 41.7 per cent.
Bryan Michaels impressed again in his first season at Warwick with 21 points, six assists and five rebounds while Caleb Davis contributed 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
George Pearl added 18 points and 10 rebounds and Perth Wildcats development player Kyle Zunic 17 points, five rebounds and two assists in his first NBL1 appearance just five days after his 'Cats campaign ended on Sunday.
Ash Litterick contributed 11 points and two steals, and Corban Wroe seven points, three boards and two assists.
It was a tough first loss of the season for the Wolfpack despite 17 points, six rebounds and three assists from Jonathan Wade.
CJ Turnage added 16 points and five rebounds, Joel Vaiangina 15 points, four boards and three assists, and Julian Pesava 10 points and six rebounds.
