Cougars stay perfect on horror night for Magic
On a night where the Cockburn Cougars welcomed their new import and the Mandurah Magic started without their legend, captain and coach, it was the unbeaten league-leaders who prevailed 84-63.
The Cougars welcomed import Patty Brossmann into the line-up for the first time this season after she finished her season in Italy and is back in the NBL1 West after being a dominant force in 2022 at the Rockingham Flames.
She was into the Cockburn team for Friday's clash with Mandurah at Wally Hagan Stadium on the same night the Magic arrived missing coach Vlad Alava, the league's games record holder Casey Mihovilovich and 354-game captain Rachel Halleen.
The night only continued to go from worse to worse for the Magic with stand-in captain Carly Boag going down with an apparent knee injury and even fill-in coach Craig Reynolds found himself ejected late in the piece with a second tech foul.
Along the way, it was a dominant performance from the unbeaten Cougars who opened up a 10-point lead by quarter-time before adding another 34 points to 17 in the second term to lead 55-28 by the half-time break.
The lead for Cockburn blew out to 33 in the third quarter but Mandurah did continue to fight the game out to limit the damage with the Cougars ending up winning by 21.
The victory improves the Cougars to a perfect 11-0 record ahead of a clash on the road to the Warwick Senators on Saturday. The Magic are now 9-4 and have to try to put together a team to host the Goldfields Giants on Sunday.
Danish import Sarah Mortensen was outstanding for Cockburn with 31 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and two assists on shooting 13/22 from the field and 3/7 from deep.
Patty Brossmann added seven points, eight rebounds and two assists in her first game of the season while Jewel Williams put up 21 points, four assists, three steals and two rebounds, Jessie Edwards nine points and four boards, and Kinley Paterson seven points and four rebounds.
It was an increasingly rough night for Mandurah with Sarah Toeaina ending up with 17 points, four rebounds and three steals, Hannah Hank 15 points, nine rebounds, five steals and four assists on just 4/16 shooting, and former Cougar Kat Tudor 12 points and seven rebounds.

Senators blow away frontcourt light Eagles
The championship defence continues to pick up steam for the Warwick Senators with a 109-50 thumping of the shorthanded East Perth Eagles on Friday night.
The Senators have had a shaky start to the season on the back of becoming NBL1 West and National Champions last year, but they built some confidence and momentum with last Saturday's 29-point win over the Perth Redbacks on the back of 51 points from Stacey Barr.
They then hit the road to play the Eagles on Friday at Herb Graham Recreation Centre and despite the absence of injured captain Nicole Jorre de St Jorre to delay her 450-game milestone, the Senators put on quite the show.
The Senators already led 26-19 by quarter-time and then turned it on further in the second stanza with 32 points to 13 to go into the break on top 58-32.
It was more of the same in the second half including 28 points to just five from East Perth in the fourth period with Warwick scoring the 59-point victory.
The win improves the Senators to a 6-5 record with consecutive wins ahead of hosting the undefeated Cockburn Cougars at Warwick Stadium on Saturday.
The Eagles had a rough night to now be 5-11 with four straight losses as they dearly missed front court trio Maddie Allen and Sam Lubcke.
Nat Burton geared up for her 200th game in the league on Saturday night by putting up 24 points, six rebounds and two assists for the Senators.
Karly Murphy added 21 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals with Stacey Barr contributing 18 points, seven boards and three assists, and Kyana Weir a career-best 11 points and four steals.
Sylwia Bujniak top-scored for East Perth with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals while Sarah Allen added 10 points and three boards, and Tessa Morrison eight points, two rebounds and two assists.
Clarke fires as Hawks blow away Redbacks
With a star missing on either team, it was the Perry Lakes Hawks much better equipped to cope as they delivered another big loss to the Perth Redbacks with Friday night's 104-56 home victory.
Perry Lakes came into the game missing import guard Nici Gilday while Perth were without superstar centre Lauren Scherf, and the longer the game went, the more the Hawks were able to impose their will on the Redbacks.
Perry Lakes overcame an early six-point deficit to open up an eight-point lead by quarter-time, and then the Hawks led by as much as 18 points in the second stanza which was the lead at half-time at 56-38.
The Perry Lakes advantage blew out to 34 points in the third term and then 50 in the fourth before they eventually won by 48 to improve to a 9-5 record on the season and bounce back from a couple of nail-biting losses to the Goldfields Giants and Joondalup Wolves.
It's another tough loss for the Redbacks who have now lost six in-a-row to sit on a 1-11 record.
Sydney Flames WNBL star Emma Clarke had a big night again for the Hawks to keep her name in the MVP discussion with 28 points, 10 rebounds and six assists on 11/19 shooting from the floor and 5/10 from downtown.
Sam Ashby continues to make an immediate impact coming back to Perry Lakes from college too with 20 points with 4/5 three-point shooting while Ash Isenbarger delivered 17 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, and Mia Satie 12 points, seven boards, three assists and three steals.
DaJah Daniel finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and three steals for the Redbacks with Brooke Malone contributing 11 points and six boards, and Shenae Hartree 10 points, 11 rebounds and three steals.
MEN
Field, Alexander lead Cougars to back-to-back wins
The Cockburn Cougars have won consecutive matches for the first time this season with Gavin Field helping to set up Friday night's 117-97 victory against the Mandurah Magic.
Both teams came into the match up at Wally Hagan Stadium looking for consecutive wins for the first time this season with Cockburn fresh off a morale boosting win in Kalgoorlie last Saturday night while the Magic won their first game of the season on Monday at home to East Perth.
The Cougars were still without Seva Chan, Luke Phillips and Nathan Pond, but welcomed back young gun Charlie Dimmock and 197-game veteran Hayden Bell for some added depth to take on the Magic with.
But it was Mandurah who started the better to lead 11-8 before an Andrew Cooper timeout helped Cockburn turn the tide.
The Cougars would outscore the Magic 31 points 20 the rest of the quarter with captain Gavin Field scoring 12 of those with four three-pointers.
A 70-point opening quarter between the two teams provided quite the spectacle and it including some spectacular finishes at and above the rim from Cougars big man Courtney Alexander II.
It remained a tight contest throughout the second quarter with Cockburn just leading 62-57 by half-time in an entertaining affair.
However, the longer the game went the more the Cougars began to pull away and the lead got out to as much as 17 points in the third quarter, and then 20 in the fourth.
To the credit of the Magic, they did continue to fight it out even after the ejection of CJ Bobbitt and got back to within five points with five minutes to play to send a scare into the Cougars.
However, Cockburn was able to steady the ship to end up winning by 20 to make it back-to-back wins, and five in the last eight matches to improve to 5-8 ahead of a trip to Warwick Stadium to face the Senators on Saturday.
The Magic are now 1-13 ahead of hosting the Goldfields Giants on Sunday.
Gavin Field kept his hot form going for the Cougars with the six-time club MVP and 308-game captain having 18 points in the first half and finishing with 25 for the game to go with 10 assists, eight rebounds and five steals while shooting 7/12 from beyond the arc.
He had plenty of help with Courtney Alexander II putting up 29 points, nine rebounds and three assists on 13/23 shooting while Keegan Phillips had another 20 points, eight boards, four assists and two blocks.
Taj Benning also had 18 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals for Cockburn, Josh Hunt 12 points, four assists and three rebounds, and Kieran Berry three points and seven assists.
Former league MVP Ray Turner delivered 30 points and 15 rebounds on 13/17 shooting for Mandurah before fouling out late with Dequan Abrom adding 26 points and 10 assists, and CJ Bobbitt 22 points, six boards and five assists before he received his marching orders.

Full strength Eagles deliver win of the season
The East Perth Eagles welcomed back guards Jerami Grace and Sebit Reath, and scored their best win of the season beating the Warwick Senators 88-84 at Herb Graham Recreation Centre.
It's been a struggle this season for the Eagles including two losses last weekend to two teams outside the top eight, Lakeside and Mandurah, but they were back at full strength on Friday night to host the Senators.
Warwick welcomed back point guard Ethan Elliott but lost captain Cody Ellis, and were looking to build on the momentum from last week's win over the Perth Redbacks.
It was a tight contest the entire evening with no more than eight points ever separating the two teams with the lead continuing to change hands throughout the contest.
However, it was late in the piece when two huge Warwick three-pointers from Caleb Davis and Jay Thwaites took the Senators from a point down to five points up that looked to be the decisive move in the match.
From that point on, though, the Eagles outscored the Senators 11 points to two in a stunning finish to the contest with Lee Roberts, Taylor Young and Sebit Reath all coming up huge to secure the four-point victory.
The win is the third of the season for the Eagles who improve to 3-13 while it's a blow for the Senators as they try to cling to a playoff spot at 6-6.
It was the return of backcourt pair Reath and Jerami Grace that gave East Perth the spark needed. Reath ended up with 21 points and 12 rebounds on 8/13 shooting while Grace added 17 points.
Lee Roberts also had 22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks, and Taylor Young 16 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals.
It would be a frustrating loss for the Senators who were hoping to build on a terrific performance to beat the Redbacks.
Caleb Davis finished with 22 points and seven rebounds with Ethan Elliott returning for 21 points, six boards and four assists. Hussayn Ford also had 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals, and George Pearl 11 points, eight boards and six assists.
Motivated Redbacks hit back in style
Motivation was high on a number of fronts for the Perth Redbacks at Bendat Basketball Centre on Friday night, and they produced a 95-85 victory against the Perry Lakes Hawks.
The Redbacks came into the Friday night clash determined to make up for last week's loss to the Warwick Senators that ended their five-game winning streak, but also coach Charles Nix and star players Bryton Hobbs and Tevin Jackson were up against their former team.
That set the stage for a fascinating evening with Perry Lakes trying to keep hold of top spot in the NBL1 West, but it was the Redbacks who started on fire with 33 points to 23 in the opening stanza.
The Redbacks would never surrender the lead the rest of the way and would be on top by as much as 26 points in a dominant performance against the league-leaders.
Perth was still leading 55-41 at half-time with that lead again 17 points in the third quarter before they held firm to win by 10 and improve to a 9-4 record on the season. The Hawks are now 11-4.
Former Perry Lakes import point guard Bryton Hobbs put in a starring performance in the win for the Redbacks with 27 points, seven rebounds and six assists on 12/21 shooting.
Perth captain Tevin Jackson also had 15 points, four rebounds and two assists with Chuatwech Reath contributing 14 points and four boards, and Joel Vaiangina 14 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Kyden Edman also produced 12 points, two rebounds and two steals, and Brian Voelkel nine points, 13 assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Mitch Clarke put up another 17 points, 10 assists and five rebounds for Perry Lakes with Matt Leary adding 16 points, three boards and two steals, Jack Isenbarger 14 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists, and Daniel Alexander 12 points, nine boards and three assists.
