The Perry Lakes Hawks dug deep late for a crucial Friday night NBL1 West victory while the Warwick Senators flexed their muscles once again to make it 13 wins in-a-row.
There were two NBL1 West Friday night matches to open Round 16 of the 2022 season with wins for the Perry Lakes Hawks over the Perth Redbacks, and for the Warwick Senators against the Cockburn Cougars.
The Perry Lakes Hawks had to fight hard but ended up getting the win they needed in the battle over eighth spot that they are locked in with the Goldfields Giants.
The Hawks ended up beating the Perth Redbacks 79-73 with a late Mia Satie offensive rebound that led to a Sara Loomis three-point bomb proving critical.
Emma Clarke ended the night with 22 points and 11 rebounds for Perry Lakes with Loomis adding 16 points and 11 boards.
The Redbacks were hunting consecutive wins for the first time this season but it wasn’t to be despite 23 points and nine rebounds from import big Parker Esary.
There was then no let up from the Warwick Senators after they ended the winning streak of the Joondalup Wolves last week as they put on a dominant second half to end up hammering the Cockburn Cougars 99-63.
The Senators have now won 13 straight to continue to put pressure on the Wolves in top spot. Leonie Fiebich put up 22 points and 15 rebounds in Friday night's win with Stacey Barr adding another 19 points, six rebounds and six assists with three three-pointers.
It was a rough night for the Cougars who saw their top-four hopes slip away as a result with Jessie Edwards finishing with 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots.
Round 16 in the NBL1 West continues on Saturday evening with the Willetton Tigers at home to the Rockingham Flames with the Cockburn Cougars also hosting the South West Slammers, and the Mandurah Magic taking on the Goldfields Giants.
The Lakeside Lightning also play the Warwick Senators and the Perry Lakes Hawks back up against the East Perth Eagles.
Round 16 in the NBL1 West then wraps up on Sunday at 11am with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns playing the Goldfields Giants at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

PERTH REDBACKS 73 lost to PERRY LAKES HAWKS 79
The Perry Lakes Hawks left it late but ended up getting the crucial win they needed to strengthen their NBL1 West playoff hopes with a six-point win over the Perth Redbacks on Friday night.
The Redbacks might be out of playoff contention themselves but they have no shortage of talent and experience, and are more than capable of playing spoilers over the last three weeks of the regular season.
That chance presented on Friday night to open Round 16 at Belmont Oasis with them hosting a Perry Lakes team fighting for their lives as they continue to jostle over eighth spot with the Goldfields Giants.
Perry Lakes got off to a flying start in the crucial match up for them at one point scoring eight consecutive points to put up 29 points to 14 in the opening term to be in control by quarter-time.
However, the Redbacks fired up in the second period and with the presence inside of import Parker Esary, they turned the tide by scoring 13 consecutive points themselves to end up outscoring the Hawks 26 points to 14 to cut the Hawks lead to 43-40 at the long break.
Perth was able to keep that momentum going in the third quarter too to grab the lead after a 6-0 run to end up leading by as much as eight points, and to still be up 60-56 by three quarter-time.
Eventually Perry Lakes grabbed the lead with just under four minutes to go thanks to Emma Clarke but the Redbacks responded with a huge triple from Mikayla Pirini.
Jess Jakens then kept the Redbacks on top in the final minute before Mia Satie found Sara Looms inside to tie scores up again. She drew the foul and missed the extra shot, but that ended up turning into a blessing.
The biggest play of the night was to come with Satie grabbing the offensive rebound and then finding a wide open Loomis up at the top of the arc. She drained the three-point shot and from there the Hawks secured the crucial 79-73 victory.
As a result of the win, the Hawks improve to 7-10 on the season to remain just ahead of the 6-10 Goldfields Giants in eighth spot while the Redbacks couldn’t string consecutive wins together and are now 4-13.
Ahead of her upcoming WNBL season at the Sydney Uni Flames, Emma Clarke had a terrific night for Perry Lakes with 22 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals with Sara Loomis stepping up to deliver 16 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.
Ruby Vlahov also had 13 points and five rebounds with Morgan Ballantyne contributing eight points, seven boards and seven assists, and Ellie Newman seven points, three rebounds and two assists.
Parker Esary delivered 23 points and nine rebounds for the Redbacks with Makailah Dyer finishing with 16 points, five boards and three assists, Jess Jakens 14 points and six rebounds, and Mikayla Pirini 11 points and seven assists.
WARWICK SENATORS 99 defeated COCKBURN COUGARS 63
The Warwick Senators are the hottest team in the NBL1 West and they showed why once again with a dominant performance against the Cockburn Cougars.
The Senators handed the Joondalup Wolves their first loss of the 2022 season last week so were full of confidence coming back to Warwick Stadium on Friday to host the Cougars on a 12-game winning streak.
However, the Cougars arrived with ambitions still of a top four finish and with enough talent and firepower to take it right up to the Senators, but that's not how it would pan out.
Warwick put together seven straight points late in the first quarter to go into quarter-time leading 22-16 but Cockburn was able to stick with them during the second period.
The Cougars went on their own run of seven straight points to lead by as much as five points at one stage of the second quarter, but the Senators responded going into half-time to still be on top 40-36.
The game was right up for grabs at the break but that didn’t stay the case for long with Warwick asserting their dominance in the third quarter.
The Senators outscored the Cougars 31 points to 19 and lead by as much as 16 points at one stage, and were leading 71-55 by three quarter-time.
It was even more dominance from Warwick in the fourth quarter as they piled on 28 points to eight to end up winning 99-63 to continue their remarkable run of form.
The Senators have now won 13 games in-a-row to remain in second position at 16-2. They also have a better percentage than the Wolves so should they drop another game in the run home they'll nab top spot.
Meanwhile, the Cougars now 10-7 ahead of hosting the South West Slammers on Saturday and clinging to fifth position.
The Senators dominated on the glass pulling down 48 rebounds to 29 for the game while shooting at a scorching 56.2 per cent from the field opposed to the 42.9 per cent from the Cougars.
Leonie Fiebich was outstanding for Warwick finishing the night with 22 points, 15 rebounds and three assists on 9/13 shooting.
Stacey Barr added 19 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Senators with Nat Burton putting up 14 points and five boards, Chloe Forster 12 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists, and Nicole Jorre de St Jorre 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Jessie Edwards ended up leading the charge for Cockburn with 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots on 8/12 shooting from the floor and 4/5 from the foul line.
Alina Hartmann added 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals, Haylee De Sousa nine points and three boards, Kat Tudor nine points and two assists, and Jewel Williams eight points and nine assists.
