South tip Southern to open their account for 2025
It wasn’t the prettiest contest but a well contested matchup between the two southern rivals ensured with the South Adelaide Panthers grabbing an early victory against their rivals the Southern Tigers 58-70 at the Cage.
Under returning coach Daniel Jaunutis - new Tiger McKenzie Johnston rode her way to an impressive debut as the UK Super League Leicester Rider posted 26 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and three steals but it was the away side that started the better 6-16 at the end of one.
Experienced Ash “Cash” Spencer (19 points, four rebounds and steals) and Bella Stratford (nine points, nine rebounds and four assists) kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Panthers to help swing them to a handy halftime lead 26-40. The Tigers fought back in the third through Johnston and Annaliese Bartsch to close it to 12 points at three quarter time.
Former Tiger Bianca Stasinowsky (10 points and seven rebounds), guard Hatti Cox (16 points, five assists and four rebounds) and Eagles recruit Hannah Gardiner (16 points, six rebounds and three steals) kept that margin intact in the final term to close the contest and give the Panthers their first up win of the season.
The Panthers pounced when it mattered on the Tigers - can they take it up to one of the early title favourites West Adelaide? Find out next Saturday at 6:30pm local time via NBL1.com.au or the NBL1 App. SOUTHERN TIGERS 58 (Johnston 26, Bartsch 13, Beeche 7) SOUTH ADELAIDE PANTHERS 70 (Spencer 19, Cox, H Gardiner 16) Monster from Morgan spoils Lions league celebrations It was meant to be a celebration with the unveiling of their historic championship banner but the Central Districts Lions instead were shell shocked after the second quarter by a sharp Morgan Yaeger and the Eastern Mavericks 81-110 at the Den. The second Kayo Freebies Game of the Week had the Mavericks pile on 56-86 after a tight opener led by new Lions recruit Clare-Maree Hunt (12 points, seven rebounds and three assists) 25-24. But no one could keep up with Yaeger as she powered her way to 25 points for the half paired with six rebounds - except her former teammate Sydney Wright as she showed her poise and moves back in her local league. Sydney Wright creating space and hitting the triple ? Wright continued to add to her tally but Yaeger’s continued to grow as she amassed the third highest women’s individual score since 2021 just behind Ally Wilson and Olivia Levicki. Yaeger compiled 47 points with six triples, 14 rebounds, seven assists and five steals but also had time to feed new import centre South Dakota Coyote Aspen Williston for 24 points and 10 rebounds in promising signs for the Hills side ahead for 2025. The Mavs scored a hundred for the first time since July 2023 and brought it up only for the third time in the NBL1 Central era of the league - with all three against the Lions… The Mavericks have made an early statement - can they bring that to their home floor against the fired up Forestville Eagles? Find out next Saturday at 6:15pm local time via NBL1.com.au or the NBL1 App. CENTRAL DISTRICTS LIONS 81 (Wright 23, Maree-Hunt, Saurette 12) EASTERN MAVERICKS 110 (Yaeger 47, Williston 24, Watkinson 10) Brand-on point as Panthers pound Tigers at Cage The Panthers may have found a new face to get around in the Mitsubishi Motors NBL1 Central with new import centre Christian Brandon blitzing the Southern Tigers in the second half to win 61-86 at the Cage. The Panthers pounced out of the starting blocks led by new captain and Adelaide 36ers Tom Kubank (13 points in the first half) off to a ringing start under returning NBL1 Central coach Paul Bell. Tigers new recruits rose up with Townsville Flame Harry Morris (15 points, nine rebounds with two blocks) and Jarvis Summers (12 points, five rebounds, four assists with two steals) showing their credentials to keep the Tigers in the contest 33-42 at the half. Harry Morris taking flight ?? After the half though as the game cruised along - the lift came from Brandon as he dominated with dunks and the biggest block we’ve seen in quite sometime chasing down Sunday Bol from behind. Continuing his form from the previous season point guard Curtis Scott set the table against his former side compiling 12 points, seven assists and four steals. Brandon however was undeniable with a second half of 21 points with a perfect three of three from beyond the arc plus four rebounds putting the Tigers to bed and sealing the comfortable win with a 20-30 second half. The Panthers tamed the Tigers in the opening round but will they be able to do the same to the West Adelaide Bearcats? Find out next Saturday at 8:15pm local time via NBL1.com.au or the NBL1 App. SOUTHERN TIGERS 61 (Morris 15, Summers 12, Bol 9) SOUTH ADELAIDE PANTHERS 86 (Brandon 29, Kubank 15, Scott 12) Rivalry result nearly repeats as result reversed between Lions and Mavs It nearly happened twice in a row in consecutive rivalry rounds in the Kayo Freebies Game of the Week with the Central Districts Lions holding on at home despite another Eastern Mavericks game-winner on the line 95-93 at the Den. In an enthralling Sunday afternoon contest - the Mavs Owen Raneburg (Nine points and three steals) got rolling early to awaken the nightmares as he reeled off six quick points but then handed the reins over to new import guard Broderick Robinson as he rattled off eight off his own to give the Mavs the early ascendancy 21-26. Former NBA G-League product Efe Abogidi (17 points and six rebounds) showed his range early for the Lions and continued to provide problems in the second term while in his debut young rising star of the league Deng Manyang (12 points, three rebounds and steals) impressed in his first half. The second term was highlighted with dunks and athletic plays from both teams but BJ Symons of the Mavs also found different ways to tick the scoreboard over to leave it 42-46 at the half. It stayed tight during the third as Robinson (30 points with four triples, 10 assists, four steals with three rebounds), Symons (15 points and 11 rebounds) and a lightning push from Dom Jackson (12 points and four rebounds) kept the Mavs in front. The Lions however through former Norwood Flame Jack Stanwix (15 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds and two steals) and after a strong UBL season for the Adelaide Waatu Ayual Garang (17 points with four triples and four rebounds) emerged in the match with Garang heaving and making a three quarter time buzzer beater bringing it back to 69-74 with one to play - already the memories were beginning to flood back for all. No one told returning import stretch forward Kevin Baker (20 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals) though as he missioned his way to eight last quarter points as he and the Lions put the Lions in front late in the match. With 26 seconds left and scores level again he was fouled on the three point attempt and had free throws to seal the match, making the first two he tried to make the third hit the rim but got the execution wrong throwing it against the backboard and missing the iron which led to the Mavs with the ball in hand - one second remaining. Unlike Raneburg in 2024 - Robinson’s tough 45 left wing triple fell short and the Lions held on at the Den to give them a different start to this season… The Lions survived a scare from their rivals the Mavs but can they take the Cave away from the Sturt Sabres???
