There were wins for the Hobart Chargers women and Mount Gambier Pioneers men on Friday night in the NBL1 South.

The Hobart Chargers ended their losing run in Friday night's NBL1 South before the Mount Gambier Pioneers men consolidated a top two spot with the road victory to open First Nations Round.

WOMEN

Hobart Chargers (80) defeated Mount Gambier Pioneers (59)

One of the two teams was going to snap a losing slide and it was the Hobart Chargers on their home floor that got their wish with Chelsea D'Angelo producing 25 points in the 80-59 win against the Mount Gambier Pioneers.

The Chargers were back home at Hobart Netball and Sports Centre looking to snap a seven-game losing slide as they played host to a Pioneers team also having lost their past three matches to be all but out of the finals race as well.

Hobart made a flying start going on a 12-0 run in the first quarter to be leading by 10 but Mount Gambier turned the tide and by quarter-time were leading 17-16.

The Chargers did work back on top in the second term to go into half-time leading 35-31 before it was a domination from Hobart in the third quarter as they put the result beyond doubt.

The Chargers scored 27 points in the third period on 12/18 shooting from the field while the Pioneers managed just the nine points on 4/18.

From there Hobart completed the deal on the 21-point victory to score a first win since May 16 to improve to 5-14 on the season with just three matches remaining.

Chelsea D'Angelo delivered 25 points, five steals, four rebounds and four assists on 11/18 shooting in the win for Hobart with Tayla Roberts adding 21 points, eight boards and four steals.

Sharna Thompson also had 18 points and four assists, and Ellie Collins nine points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Mount Gambier are now 6-12 on the season having lost four straight while backing up against the Launceston Tornadoes on Saturday.

Maddy Timms put up 12 points and nine rebounds for the Pioneers with Isa Brancatisano adding 12 points and six boards, and Mackenzie Burke eight points and three rebounds.

MEN

Hobart Chargers (77) lost to Mount Gambier Pioneers (87)

The Mount Gambier Pioneers started their Tasmania road double with a hard earned 87-77 win over the Hobart Chargers to maintain a top two spot and keep the home team out of the top four.

Both teams are looking to make their case as championship threats this NBL1 South season and it set up a fascinating match up at Hobart Netball and Sports Centre to open Round 13 on Friday night.

The Pioneers came into the contest sitting second at 11-6 with the Chargers not far behind in fifth place at 10-7 highlighting just what was at stake in the match up.

The scores were all locked together at 19-19 by quarter-time before Mount Gambier managed to open up a narrow 42-39 lead by the half-time interval.

The Pioneers then opened up a match-winning advantage in the third quarter with 31 points to 19 on the back of knocking down seven of their 11 three-point attempts.

Mount Gambier ended up leading by as much as 17 points as a result and went on to confirm the 10-point victory that consolidates them in second position ahead of taking on the North West Tasmania Thunder on Saturday night.

Joe Palmer was the star of the victory for Mount Gambier with 26 points, nine rebounds and four assists on 11/17 field goal shooting.

Alex Mudronja added 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals, Akech Aliir 14 points, six boards and three blocked shots, Austin Shelley 14 points on 4/8 three-point shooting, and Titus Robinson eight points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.

The Chargers missed the chance to break into the top four and are now left battling just to stay in the top eight with a 10-8 record and games to finish against Frankston, Diamond Valley and Dandenong.

Jacob Richards top-scored for Hobart with 21 points to go with five assists, three steals and two rebounds with Will Cranston-Lown adding 19 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Ole Angerstein also contributed 12 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks, and Joe Chilcott seven points along with four boards.
