Throwback Jerseys for Heartfelt Cause

The Townsville Heat and Flames will be wearing special throwback jerseys on Friday night to help raise funds for gynaecological cancer charity WomenCan.

The Heat will wear old NBL Townsville Crocodiles throwback jerseys, while the Flames will rock uniforms of the WNBL’s Townsville Fire.

The jerseys will be auctioned off after the games, with funds going towards WomenCan, who raise money for research into gynaecological cancers such as ovarian, cervical, uterine, vulva and vaginal cancer.

It is a special cause for Heat captain Ethan Betts, whose mother Toni is an ovarian cancer survivor.

“It’s always a privilege to put on a Crocs jersey in some form. It’s really fun, and really exciting that the girls get to wear the Fire one as well,” Betts said.

“It’s a really important night for me and my family, we get to raise awareness for ovarian cancer and support a good cause.

“It’s a massive opportunity for myself to play hard and show how much it means to me to have her (Toni) around.

“I’ve seen how much she has gone through in the past and it's my opportunity to show her that I can play a hard game of basketball for all the suffering she's had to go through in the last five years – and it's not only just supporting her, it's supporting the whole organisation and giving back to WomenCan.”

The Townsville Heat and Flames will be playing the Southern Districts Spartans at the Townsville Starfm Stadium. Women’s tip-off is at 6:00pm AEST and the men’s is 8:00pm AEST.
