Melbourne United coach Dean Vickerman says the club will support their players competing in the Mitsubishi Motors NBL1 National Finals where possible.
NBL1 is a proven development tool for United, and Vickerman acknowledges the importance of the competition as a platform for players to grow and prove themselves.
“We as a club value the experience our young players get when they take to the court in the NBL offseason, whether that be in the NBL1 or abroad. It provides them with an opportunity to improve their game and come back ready to make an impact in our upcoming NBL season,” Vickerman told NBL Media.
“Where possible, we support our players representing their NBL1 teams through to the conclusion of their seasons, including the NBL1 National Finals.”

A portion of Melbourne’s rostered players have seen immeasurable growth by playing in the NBL1 competition, with Campbell Blogg and Tom Koppens developing into key starters for the Sandringham Sabres.
The duo’s increased roles in NBL1 have allowed them to develop their skills and confidence, making it a smoother transition into the NBL.
With Shea Ili and Tanner Krebs continuing to shine alongside Blogg and Koppens, Mount Gambier’s Akech Aliir winning multiple Player of the Week awards this season and Knox’s Kyle Bowen averaging a double-double, it’s clear to see how United benefits from their players dominating in NBL1 South.
