They were then backing up on Saturday back home at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre with the Lightning arriving also clinging to a place in the top eight and coming off a road win to the Goldfields Giants two weeks ago.
That set the stage for a fascinating match up and at no point during the opening 40 minutes did any more than eight points ever separate the two teams.

Buccs coach Dayle Joseph received a tech foul on half-time too with the tension high in the packed building heading into the second half, and the frustration did spill over on a perceived non-call the home team saw on Narkle with just over two minutes left in the third term.
Joseph's protests earned him a second tech foul seeing his night over as he went back to the locker room and Carter Cook took over the rest of the game.
When that happened, Geraldton were leading by five points and they managed to extend the advantage to seven by three quarter-time.

The Perth Redbacks took full advantage of a South West Slammers team without an import with the 92-75 road win on Saturday night.
Despite being sorely undermanned, the Redbacks produced a tremendous performance last Friday night to beat the East Perth Eagles ahead of their trip south on Saturday to take on the Slammers at Eaton Recreation Centre.
While Perth were still without Joe Cook-Green, Mathiang Muo and Callan McDonald, the Slammers were left decimated with a suspension to import centre Jamal Poplar with fellow import Calvin Whipple still out through injury.
Despite that, the Slammers started well to be leading 23-20 by quarter-time before the Redbacks worked on top in the second frame with 29 points to 17 thanks to going 8/11 at the foul line and sending South West there just once.
That meant Perth were leading 49-40 by half-time before continuing to build on that lead the rest of the way with it getting out to 12 points in the third quarter, and 17 in the fourth.

Perry Lakes were coming off a stunning game the previous night against the Mandurah Magic where they prevailed 120-115 in overtime with Matt Leary leading the way with a career-best 45 points.
So they arrived at Mike Barnett Sports Complex on a high from that on Saturday night but the Flames also came into the match up on an eight-game winning streak and as the hottest team in the league.

That would be the last score of regulation with both teams missing some good looks and then ultimately Luke Phillips not getting a call on the final possession for Perry Lakes as he attacked the basket with Rockingham having lost import centre Jervon Pressley to injury.
Then in the extra period, the Flames scored the first five points thanks to White and Tevin Jackson before Laquinton Ross pushed their lead out to six when he converted a three-point play.
Jaden Stanley-Williams did make a three in the final minute to get Perry Lakes back within three points and then the Hawks had the chance to draw level after an offensive foul call on Emmett Naar.
However, Stanley-Williams' attempt didn’t fall and then Seva Chan was called for an unsportsmanlike foul which brought an end to the game effectively as time ran out after White made one of his two free-throw attempts.
The four-point overtime win improves Rockingham to an 11-1 record and to move into top spot with Warwick's loss also on Saturday night to the East Perth Eagles.
