The Brisbane Bullets have further strengthened their roster heading into the NBL23, with the signing of four-year college forward Matt Johns as a development player.

A defensively focused 203-centimetre forward, Johns put together a strong college career with South Dakota and Concordia St Paul, before returning to Australia to compete in the NBL1 South with his hometown Geelong Supercats.

Johns pulled together a successful junior career, then headed to the United States to play in the NCCA, most notably representing Australia at the U/17 World Championships.

He joins the likes of fellow local players Lat Mayen, Sam Waardenburg and Grant Anticevich in returning to Australia after completing succesful college careers.

Bullets head coach James Duncan says Johns is a good fit for his side, both on and off the court.

“Matty came up here and fit into our group perfectly. He surprised us with his athleticism, passing ability and shooting. He showed an eagerness to sit down, guard defensively and rebound,” Duncan told the club's website

“This is the type of player we want to be developing here in Brisbane. I’m excited to have in on board.”

Johns says he's looking forward to beginning his professional career in Brisbane.

“I’m really excited to be a part of this group. There is a real buzz around practice’s and the team this year,” he said.

”All the boys have welcomed me in with open arms and I feel grateful to be a part of this team.”
