Geelong Supercats 94 def Sandringham Sabres 71
The Geelong Supercats have notched its third win of the season, dominating the Sandringham Sabres at home.
Geelong got off to the perfect start, outscoring the visitors 17-3 across the first five minutes of action.
After taking a 23-10 lead into the first quarter break, the Supercats continued to show no signs of rust after the extended break, going on a 10-0 run over the first two minutes of the quarter.
The same could not be said for Sandringham, which struggled all over the court in the first half, turning the ball over and struggling to find any consistency shooting the ball.
While the Sabres were able to string together a strong third term, outscoring Geelong 30-27, the damage done in the first half was too much to overcome.
Sara Blicavs put together an impressive performance in her Supercats debut, scoring 20 points and pulling down eight rebounds in the 23-point win.
Frankston Blues 73 def Diamond Valley Eagles 55
The Frankston Blues remain the only unbeaten team in the NBL1 Women’s competition, winning its 10th consecutive game, this time at home over the winless Diamond Valley Eagles.
The Blues shot out to a commanding 20-point lead in the first term and never looked back, holding Diamond Valley at bay for the remainder of the game.
The Eagles were able to reduce the deficit to 11 points to close the second quarter, thanks to some strong defence and scoring from youngsters Hayley Sparks and Sophie Burrows.
After the main break however, Frankston showcased its poise, extending and maintaining its lead to secure the win.
Darcee Garbin led the game in scoring (18) and rebounding (15), while Saraid Taylor and Ella Batish also put together impressive games.
Knox Raiders 96 def Ringwood Hawks 58
The Knox Raiders have put together a statement victory, blowing out the Ringwood Hawks at home.
The Raiders held the advantage during a tight first quarter, as Ringwood pushed hard to snatch the lead.
It was more of the same in the second term, as it seemed that no matter how hard the Hawks pushed, Knox remained one step, and more importantly, multiple baskets, ahead.
It was in the second half that things fully fell apart for Ringwood, as poor shooting and costly turnovers made things easy for Knox.
The Raiders outscored the visitors 49-23 across the final 20 minutes of action, as Klara Wisher (22 points, 10 rebounds, six assists) and Leah Santomaggio (20 points) led the way.
The 38-point win is Knox’s sixth in its first seven games.
Nunawading Spectres 93 def Waverley Falcons 57
Nunawading’s hopes of solidifying its place in the top eight of the competition have been strengthened after handily defeating the Waverley Falcons at home.
The Spectres took the lead early thanks to some crisp passing. The home side tallied 22 assists on its 31 made baskets.
Izzy Wright led the way for Nunawading, nearly putting together a triple-double in the victory (13 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds), while Rachel Antoniadou seemed to score however she liked against the Falcons defence (26 points on 15 shots).
For Waverley, Kelly Bowen did her best to keep her side in the game, scoring 17 points in 23 minutes, however none of the visitors could seem to find their range from outside the paint.
The Falcons failed to net any three pointers in the 36-point loss.
Waverley will hope to put its poor shooting behind it heading into a home game against Eltham on Sunday.
Ballarat Rush 58 def by Kilsyth Cobras 86
The Ballarat Rush have dropped its sixth consecutive game of the year, going down at home to the Kilsyth Cobras.
After conceding the first basket of the game, Kilsyth took back the lead and kept it for the following 39 minutes.
The Cobras Led by as many as 13 points in the first term before Ballarat started to mount its comeback attempt.
Trailing 40-27 midway through the second term, Ballarat found its rhythm, going on a 15-6 run to close the gap to just four points.
That would however be the closest the Rush would come to taking the lead, as Kilsyth would use the run as a wake-up call before outscoring Ballarat 40-14 over the remainder of the contest.
Emma Pearce led all scorers in the contest, tallying a season-high 22 points, while Lauren Sherf collected a double-double (16 points, 12 rebounds).
Eltham Wildcats 82 def Albury-Wodonga Bandits 72
The Eltham Wildcats have narrowly avoided being upset on its home court against the winless Albury-Wodonga Bandits.
The Bandits controlled the game for much of the first half, leading by as many as nine points.
The visitors could only hold off Eltham for so long however, as a dominant performance on the offensive glass led the Wildcats back into the game and into the lead as the half-time buzzer sounded.
Eltham built upon this lead in the second half, pulling ahead by 16 points despite a poor shooting night from star Anneli Maley.
While Maley struggled finishing her own shots (6-19, 13 points), her tenacity on the boards and unselfish play (22 rebounds, seven assists) was crucial for the home side.
Desperate to secure its first win of the year, the Bandits kept fighting until the bitter end, going on a 12-0 run in the third quarter putting itself into a position to take the lead with only minutes remaining.
Ultimately, Eltham was able to hold on in the dying moments of the game, pulling ahead and winning by 10 points.
