The Ballarat Miners, are set to make a powerful statement as they bring back their First Nations uniform for NBL1's First Nations Round 2023. The uniform, which made its debut during last season's NAIDOC Week and the league's First Nations Round, is designed by Wadawurrung Traditional Owner, Billy-Jay O'Toole. It beautifully tells the story of managing Country together and highlights the collaboration between Central Highlands Water (CHW), Traditional Owners, and Registered Aboriginal Parties.

At the heart of the design is Bunjil, the totem of Wadawurrung Country. The uniform features intricate representations of rivers, reservoirs, and creeks, showcasing the significance of water in the region. CHW is depicted as a large circle on the left side, symbolizing their partnership with the four Registered Aboriginal Party groups they collaborate with. A brown line runs through the design, signifying ochre, while on the left-hand side, mountains symbolize the diverse Traditional Owners' Countries. The inclusion of the eucalyptus leaf represents cleansing, an essential element in Indigenous culture.

Billy-Jay O'Toole, a proud Wadawurrung man and the designer of the uniform, expressed his excitement at being able to share the story of caring for water and Country through the Ballarat Miners' uniforms. Working on Country every day allows him to connect with his ancestors, gain knowledge, and learn the stories of his traditional lands. Seeing his design showcased on the basketball court during NAIDOC Week fills him with immense pride.

O'Toole named his design "Managing Country Together," highlighting the collaboration between Central Highlands Water, Traditional Owners, and Registered Aboriginal Parties. The artwork integrates the navy and gold colors that are signature to the Ballarat Miners' brand. The large circle on the left side represents Central Highlands Water, accompanied by the four Registered Aboriginal Party groups they work closely with. The design incorporates elements that symbolize the rivers, reservoirs, and creeks, which are vital to the region. The brown line represents ochre, and the mountains on the left represent the diverse Traditional Owners' Countries. Finally, the inclusion of Bunjil, the totem of Wadawurrung Country, serves as a powerful reminder of the deep connection to the land.

This extraordinary artwork not only celebrates the culture and heritage of the Wadawurrung people but also emphasizes the importance of collaboration and working together for better outcomes. By showcasing the First Nations uniform during NBL1's First Nations Round, the Ballarat Miners proudly honor Indigenous cultures and promote unity within the community. This significant initiative showcases the team's commitment to reconciliation and serves as a powerful symbol of respect and inclusivity.
