NBL1 North Recap | Saturday Women's Round 13

There were Saturday night NBL1 North Women's Round 13 victories for the Northside Wizards, Rockhampton Cyclones, Darwin Salties, USC Rip City and Townsville Flames.

Round 13 in the NBL1 North got underway on Friday night with the Cairns Dolphins beating the Brisbane Capitals 76-68 while the Logan Thunder kept their undefeated season going beating the Rockhampton Cyclones 117-52.

Then on Saturday night, the Northside Wizards scored a thumping win over the Cairns Dolphins who were backing up from Friday night to prevail 102-66.

Tiana Mangakahia's remarkable run of form certainly continued and not only did she produce a huge triple-double, it was almost a quadruple double with her night made up of 22 points, 17 assists, 15 rebounds and eight steals.

Amy Lewis finished with 20 points for Cairns, Myra Donkin 19, Leichan Williams 14 and Teyahna Bond 13.

The Rockhampton Cyclones did well to bounce back from their Friday night loss to beat the Red City Roar 91-83 in another road game on Saturday.

Jannon Otto delivered 27 points and nine rebounds with Heidi Freeburn adding 19 points and Lara McSpadden 17 for Rockhampton. Mia Lloyd scored 31 points in the loss for Red City.

USC Rip City were another team to hit the road on Saturday night in the NBL1 North to beat the South West Metro Pirates 74-55.

Carlie Smith helped inspire the win for Rip City with 26 points and 17 rebounds while Bride Kennedy-Hopoate had 21 points for South West.

The Darwin Salties began their road trip double-header beating the Sunshine Coast Phoenix 77-69.

Ruby Porter top-scored in the win for the Salties with 18 points with Chelsea Brook adding 12, Lauren Heard 15 and Serena Waters 10. Nicola Handreck produced 24 points for Sunshine Coast and Madeleine White 22.

The Townsville Flames were able to earn a hard fought 89-74 win against the Mackay Meteorettes in Round 13 action on Saturday night.

Courtney Woods was brilliant for Townsville with 37 points and seven three-pointers with Alisia Jenkins top-scoring for Mackay with 18 points to go with 13 rebounds.

Round 13 in the NBL1 North wraps up on Sunday with all three matches tipping off at 1pm with the Ipswich Force hosting the Rockhampton Cyclones, USC Rip City taking on the Darwin Salties and the Southern Districts Spartans playing host to the Cairns Dolphins.

NORTHSIDE WIZARDS 102 defeated CAIRNS DOLPHINS 66

Yet another standout performance that almost became a quadruple-double from Tiana Mangakahia saw the Northside Wizards win big on Saturday night over the Cairns Dolphins.

The Wizards played host to the Dolphins at South Pine Sports Complex with Cairns coming off their first game of a road triple-header this weekend on Friday where they defeated the Brisbane Capitals.

It was a different story taking on the Wizards on Saturday with the home team racing out to a 16-point lead by quarter-time on the back of the 34 points to 18 in the first period.

It was more of the same in the second quarter from Northside as they piled on 27 points to 13 to see the lead grow to as much as 30 with them in control at the major break leading 61-31.

The home side didn’t let up either in the third quarter with another 25 points to 15 with the lead getting out to 44 points with the 11-0 run.

From there the Wizards ended up beating the Dolphins 102-66 which sees them improve to an 11-4 record on the season. The Dolphins are now 10-6 and will finish their triple-header weekend on Sunday against the Southern Districts Spartans.

The remarkable form of Sydney Uni Flames WNBL signing Tiana Mangakahia continued for the Wizards as she produced another 22 points, 17 assists, 15 rebounds and eight steals on 9/21 shooting from the field.

Shyla Heal added 17 points and five rebounds for the Wizards with Emma Read contributing 14 points and five boards, Caitlin Cunningham 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Kelsey McDermott 13 points and three boards.

Amy Lewis top-scored for Cairns with 20 points and seven rebounds but the going was tough in the absence of Cayla George and following Alessandra Burke's injury on Friday night.

Myra Donkin added 19 points and four rebounds, Leichan Williams 14 points and 13 boards, and Teyahna Bond 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.

 

RED CITY ROAR 83 lost to ROCKHAMPTON CYCLONES 91

The Rockhampton Cyclones withstood a fast finish from the Red City Roar to score the eight-point road victory on Saturday night.

Rockhampton were backing up from a loss to the Logan Thunder to start their triple-header weekend on Friday night by heading to Paul Bancroft Centre to take on Red City on Saturday.

Red City did open up an early four-point lead before a 7-0 run from Rockhampton saw them hold a four-point edge by the end of the first quarter.

The Cyclones then got on a roll during the second period with 27 points to 13 to open up an 18-point edge going into the main break.

They were able to turn that into a 23-point advantage during the third quarter and even though Red City gave the fightback a real crack with 33 points to 22 in the fourth term, Rockhampton held on for the 91-83 victory.

The win improves the Cyclones to a 7-10 record on the season ahead of them wrapping up their road trip against the Ipswich Force on Sunday. The Roar are now 4-12 following the defeat.

Lara McSpadden also had 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists, Sara Storeshaw 15 points, three boards and three assists, and Madison Torresin six points, 10 rebounds and two assists.

Mia Lloyd ended up top-scoring for Red City with 31 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals while Ariana Moorer contributed 22 points, 12 boards and five assists, and Jaylen Cooper 16 points and four assists. 

 

SUNSHINE COAST PHOENIX 69 lost to DARWIN SALTIES 77

The Darwin Salties opened their road double-header this weekend by beating the Sunshine Coast Phoenix by eight points on Saturday night.

Darwin made the trek south to take on Sunshine Coast at Maroochydore Stadium with the Salties starting impressively by scoring 25 consecutive points in the first term to open up a 23-point lead.

Darwin was still up 27-7 by quarter-time but Sunshine Coast did their best to fight back in the second term by scoring eight straight points to cut the deficit to 14 points by the half-time break.

The Phoenix still were working back into the contest with another 22 points to 13 in the third quarter but the Salties were able to steady with another 11-0 run to lead again by 15 and to end up winning 77-69.

The victory improves Darwin to a 4-11 record on the season before they take on USC Rip City on Sunday while the Phoenix are now 1-15 following the defeat.

Ruby Porter ended up top-scoring for the Salties with 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals with Lauren Heard contributing 15 points, five boards, three steals and two assists.

Chelsea Brook added 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals, Serena Waters 10 points, six boards, three assists and three steals, April Rummery-Lamb eight points and six rebounds, and Jessica Boundy eight points.

 

SOUTH WEST METRO PIRATES 55 lost to USC RIP CITY 74

USC Rip City put together a standout second half showing to beat the South West Metro Pirates on the road by 19 points on Saturday night.

South West were at home at USC at Hibiscus Sports Stadium as Round 13 in the NBL1 North continued on Saturday night.

While the Pirates opened up an early five-point lead before Rip City worked their way on top by scoring 11 consecutive points to go up by eight, and to still be leading 22-16 by the end of the first quarter.

South West kept within striking distance by half-time cutting the USC lead to five points before Rip City were again able to pull away to a 10-point lead by three quarter-time.

It was then all the visitors in the fourth quarter with USC ending up scoring 24 points to 13 to end up winning 74-55.

Following the victory, Rip City improves to an 8-6 record on the season ahead of hosting the Darwin Salties on Sunday while South West is now 0-15 and still hunting that first win of 2022.

Rip City raked in 58 rebounds to 36 for the night along with 21 offensive boards to nine.

Carlie Smith ended up top-scoring for USC with 26 points, 17 rebounds and four assists on 10/18 from the floor, 2/3 from downtown and 4/4 from the free-throw line.

Katherine Ups contributed 12 points with Camryn Hughes adding 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, and Liisa Ups 10 points, seven boards, four assists and three steals.

Bride Kennedy-Hopoate delivered 21 points, three steals and two rebounds for the Pirates with Cat MacGregor adding 11 points, four boards, four assists and three steals, and Alana Fraser nine points, five rebounds and three steals.

 

TOWNSVILLE FLAMES 89 defeated MACKAY METEORETTES 74

The Townsville Flames proved too strong for the Mackay Meteorettes at home on Saturday night to win by 15 points.

Townsville was at home at StarFM Stadium to play their only game of Round 13 in the NBL1 North with the Meteorettes coming to town in their lone game of the weekend as well.

The Flames started well on their home court scoring 10 consecutive points to open up an 11-point advantage by the end of the first quarter.

Townsville turned that into an 13-0 scoring streak in the second term with the lead growing out to 20 points with the home team then still leading 43-31 by the half-time break.

The Flames maintained that advantage throughout the second half and managed to lead by 21 points on a couple of separatee occasions before ending up winning 89-74.

The victory meant that Townsville improves to a 13-3 record on the season in third position while Mackay is now 9-7 in eighth spot.

Townsville ended up shooting 13/39 from three-point territory for the night opposed to 4/19 from Mackay.

Courtney Woods produced a standout performance for the Flames with 37 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals on the back of shooting 7/14 from three-point land.

Steph Reid also put up 16 points and seven assists, Mia Murray 11 points and four assists, Grace Rodgers nine points and 10 rebounds, and Jaimee Seebohm seven points, six boards and six assists.

Alisia Jenkins ended up with 18 points and 13 rebounds on the night for the Meteorettes while Monique Bobongie added 17 points and four boards, Alexa Hart 17 points and six rebounds, and Shaneice Swain 15 points, eight assists and seven boards.
