South West Metro Pirates scored a pair of Sunday NBL1 North wins over Sunshine Coast Phoenix while there was a win for Mackay Meteorettes and Cairns Marlins.

Cairns Dolphins (86) lost to Mackay Meteorettes (93)

The Mackay Meteorettes bounced back from their Friday night loss in Townsville to score the 93-86 Sunday road victory against the Cairns Dolphins.

The Meteorettes opened their road trip weekend with a three-point loss to the Townsville Flames on Friday night ahead of taking on the Dolphins on Sunday at Trinity Ford Stadium.

Cairns came into the clash on a four-match winning streak as well and it was the Dolphins clinging to the 24-22 lead by quarter-time.

Mackay was able to score nine straight points in the second frame while hitting 4/8 from three-point range to outscore Cairns 29 points to 25 to then have a narrow 51-49 lead by half-time.

The Meteorettes then managed 18 points to 11 in the third frame while holding Cairns to 5/17 shooting and that saw the Mackay lead get out to as much as 12 points in the second half.

The Meteorettes would complete the job on the seven-point road win to split the weekend in the Far North of the state to improve to a 9-3 record and to sit in third position.

Unique Thompson provided another 17 points, 16 rebounds and four assists in the win for Mackay with Cheyenne Bobongie top-scoring with 18 points, five assists and three steals on 4/5 three-point shooting.

Tori Rouse also had 14 points and three rebounds on 4/7 three-point shooting with Hannah Jensen contributing 14 points and three assists, and Amari Robinson 14 points and eight rebounds.

The Dolphins are now in fourth position after the defeat with a 6-4 record with Mia Loyd producing another 23 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Taryn Bond added 22 points, six rebounds, six steals and three assists, Leichan Williams 14 points, seven boards and two assists, and Teyahna Bond nine points, six rebounds and two assists.

MACKAY METEORETTES 93 (Bobongie 18, Thompson 17, Rouse 14, Jensen 14, Robinson 14)

Sunshine Coast Phoenix (71) lost to South West Metro Pirates (83)

Grace Champion and Steph Bairstow combined for 45 points as the South West Metro Pirates went on to record the 83-71 road win against the Sunshine Coast Phoenix.

With the Phoenix trying to secure a top six position and the Pirates to break into a playoff position, the Sunday match up at Maroochydore Stadium had plenty at stake for both teams.

Sunshine Coast had lost to the Logan Thunder the night before and were attempting to bounce back, but it was South West Metro who got the better of the start to lead 21-17 by quarter-time.

That lead for South West Metro got out to as much as 17 points in the second term when they outscored the Phoenix 29 points to 16 and from there they went into the half-time break leading 50-33.

That lead for the Pirates got out to 20 points in the second half and from there they secured the 12-point win while ending up shooting 11/22 from three-point territory opposed to the 4/23 from Sunshine Coast.

The win improves South West Metro to a 4-7 record to stay in playoff contention with Grace Championship producing 24 points and seven rebounds with 3/6 three-point shooting.

Steph Bairstow also had 21 points, eight rebounds and two steals, Beyonce Bea 13 points and 16 boards, and Jenna Kilty 10 points with 2/3 three-point shooting.

Sunshine Coast do remain inside a playoff position with a 6-6 record despite the back-to-back losses with Erin Bollmann delivering 26 points, 12 rebounds and two steals.

Jessica Boundy added 16 points, four rebounds and three assists while Shannon Ryan put up 15 points, 20 boards and three blocked shots.

Cairns Marlins (93) defeated Mackay Meteors (90)

Kody Stattmann produced 38 points and the Cairns Marlins held out the fast finishing Mackay Meteors for the eventual 93-90 home victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Marlins were back home at Trinity Ford Stadium on a six-game losing streak as the Meteors arrived after a dramatic week that saw coach Matt Paps moved on.

His replacement, Brad Rasmussen, is unavailable this weekend but will take over for the rest of the season and the Meteors did score the Friday night win with the injured Jerron Jamerson coaching against the Townsville Heat.

Mackay stayed on the road for the Sunday match up with Cairns with their championship defence still well and truly alive despite the drama of the past week.

It was the Marlins who got off to the strong start with 22 points to 14 in the first quarter having opened up a 10-point lead before retaining a 42-36 lead by the half-time interval.

Cairns delivered 27 points to 19 in the third frame to open up a 16-point lead and it was still a 15-point advantage early in the final term before Mackay threw everything at the comeback.

The Meteors piled on 35 points in the last quarter on the back of shooting 10/20 from the floor and 13/16 from the foul line, but they couldn’t quite get closer than three points with Cairns holding out for their drought breaking win.

The Marlins improve to a 3-7 record as a result of the win with Kody Stattmann delivering 38 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots including going 14/16 at the foul line.

James Mitchell added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists, Kian Dennis 12 points, three boards and two assists, and Curt Ah Wang 11 points and four rebounds.

The Meteors remain in third position at 7-5 despite the loss and splitting their road double this weekend with Makuach Maluach finishing with 23 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Akol Mawein added 19 points, four rebounds and two assists, Manny Malou 15 points and 10 boards, Cameron Goldfinch 14 points and seven rebounds, and Kye Medhurst 11 points and five boards.

Sunshine Coast Phoenix (78) lost to South West Metro Pirates (102)

Six South West Metro Pirates players scored in double-figures and they made it three straight wins with the 102-78 road victory against the Sunshine Coast Phoenix.

The Phoenix were back on their home floor at Maroochydore Stadium looking to maintain pace with top spot in the NBL1 North with the Pirates coming into the clash trying to stay in the finals race having already won their past two matches.

Sunshine Coast did score a 15-point win on Saturday night against Logan Thunder while South West Metro came into the clash after a double-win Round 9 against the Townsville Flames and Southern Districts Spartans.

The Pirates got off to the fast start with 29 points to 16 in the first quarter by making 5/10 from three-point range to end up leading by as much as 16 in those opening 10 minutes.

South West Metro kept the momentum going with the lead growing to 25 points in the second period and by half-time they were on top 58-38.

That lead got out to as much as 26 points in the second half before the Pirates secured the 24-point victory which gives them three consecutive victories to improve to a 5-6 record to stay in touch of a finals position.

Junior Madut put up 20 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Pirates with 5/8 shooting from behind the three-point arc while Kai Woodfall contributed 20 points on 6/11 three-point shooting.

Brendan Teys also had 18 points, three rebounds and three assists, Dragan Stajic 15 points, 12 boards and eight assists, Jarred Bairstow 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists, and Ben Volkman 10 points, eight boards and three assists.

Sunshine Coast remain in second position with an 8-4 record despite the loss at home with Elias Cato finishing with 15 points and six rebounds, DeShawn Ross-Paiwan 15 points on 3/5 three-point shooting, Nelson Kahler 15 points and eight rebounds, and Darnell Robateau 10 points, five assists and four boards.
