NBL1 North Recap | Sunday Men's Round 7

Round 7 of the NBL1 North Men's competition wrapped up on Sunday afternoon with a win for the Mackay Meteors against the South West Metro Pirates.

Round 7 of the NBL1 North Men's competition wrapped up on Sunday afternoon with a win for the Mackay Meteors against the South West Metro Pirates.

The Meteors had split their triple-header on the road over the first two games in Round 7, but they ended things on a high before returning home on Sunday with the 82-48 victory against the South West Metro Pirates at Hibiscus Sports Stadium.

Round 7 in the NBL1 North competition began back on Friday night with the Gold Coast Rollers beating the Rockhampton Rockets 107-96, the Ipswich Force downing the Mackay Meteors 80-72, the Logan Thunder defeating the Cairns Marlins 84-81, and the Sunshine Coast Phoenix beating the Brisbane Capitals 79-73.

Saturday night's action then got underway with the Gold Coat Rollers beating the Brisbane Capitals 99-88, the Northside Wizards defeating the South West Metro Pirates 93-77 and the Mackay Meteors downing the Red City Roar 98-91.

Also on Saturday night, USC Rip City defeated the Southern Districts Spartans 93-77, the Logan Thunder beat the Townsville Heat 89-80 and the North Gold Coast Seahawks downed the Rockhampton Rockets 97-91.

The Round 7 results mean that the Gold Coast Rollers remain on top of the Men's NBL1 North standings with a 7-1 record to be ahead of the now 8-3 Mackay Meteors.

USC Rip City, Northside Wizards and Darwin Salties all sit on 5-2 records to be just ahead of the 6-3 Sunshine Coast Phoenix with the Logan Thunder (4-3) and Cairns Marlins (4-4) rounding out the top eight.

The Ipswich Force and Rockhampton Rockets are just outside the top eight with 4-5 records ahead of the South West Metro Pirates (3-5), Brisbane Capitals (3-6), Red City Roar (2-4), Townsville Heat (2-5), North Gold Coast Seahawks (2-6) and Southern Districts Spartans (0-8).

SOUTH WEST METRO PIRATES 48 lost to MACKAY METEORS 82

The Mackay Meteors proved too strong for the South West Metro Pirates on Sunday afternoon ending their triple-header road weekend with a 34-point victory.

The Pirates have shown some encouraging signs so far this season having won three of seven matches coming into Sunday's clash, but it wasn’t a game to remember for the home team at Hibiscus Sports Stadium.

The Meteors had already lost to the Ipswich Force on Friday and beat the Red City Roar on Saturday night to start this triple-header of road matches in Round 7, and they produced an emphatic performance against the Pirates on Sunday to close things out.

Mackay held South West to just the 11 points in the first quarter to lead by seven at quarter-time before they really turned things up a notch in the second term.

The Meteors outscored the Pirates 28 points to 11 to end up leading by as much as 28 points in the second term to end up leading 47-22 at the main break.

Mackay extended their advantage to as much as 36 points in the second half before ending up winning 82-48 to improve to an 8-3 record on the season having now played six road matches in the past three weeks.

South West slips to a 3-5 record as a result of the defeat on their home court.

Jaylin Galloway produced an exciting performance for the Meteors with the Sydney Kings NBL championship winner finishing with 25 points, four steals and three rebounds while knocking down 5/8 from three-point territory.

Malok Majak also finished with 17 points and five rebounds for Mackay, Kye Medhurst 10 points, two rebounds and two steals, Kyrin Galloway seven points, 11 boards and three blocks, and Brad Rasmussen seven points and three rebounds.

The only South West player to score in double-figures was Joel Matysek with 10 points with Zac Carter adding nine points and seven rebounds, Taylor Young eight points and four boards, and Brandon Edwards six points.
